Kentucky to Release Several Thousand Felons to Balance Budget

America already has one of the weakest and ineffective penal systems in the world. You don’t have to be a convict to realize that a 10 year prison term generally means 2-3 years in lock up.

In Kentucky, it could mean even less time in jail.

Like most states, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is facing a financial shortfall in their operating budget. They are trying to look to various avenues of reducing spending and one of those they decided on is the state prison system.

In a move designed to save nearly $42 million, the commonwealth will release 990 convicted felons on Tuesday and then release around 300 more each month until they reach their savings goal. If their financial savings goal is not reached until the end of 2012, Kentucky is set to give early releases to over 4,000 convicted felons.

Rather than reducing the perks and costs of housing inmates like what happened in Arizona a few years back, Kentucky has opted to tell violent criminals that they’ll be able to serve even less time there because they just can’t afford to keep them in jail.

Mind you that the inmates they are planning to release early include those that were convicted of arson, burglary, armed robbery, and even child molestation.

The victims and families of victims are in an uproar over the early release of those that perpetrated their crimes upon them. The mother of Travis White was furious over the news that at least of those involved in her son’s murder and disposal of his body was scheduled to be released tomorrow.

Commonwealth officials need to ask themselves what is the real purpose of the prison system. If it is a place of rehabilitation, statistics have proven that they have failed miserably. If the prison system is designed to punish those that commit crimes, the early release of over 4,000 violent offenders is not helping to impress that message to would be criminals.

Instead of making a complete mockery of the legal and penal system in their commonwealth, why don’t they take other measures to reduce costs and keep the violent felons behind bars? Eliminate cable television and internet access. Change the prison menu to the bare minimum necessary to provide the basic nutritional needs and get rid of more costly foods. Instead of building more prisons, put more inmates in each cell.

If they don’t like the conditions and food, then they shouldn’t be committing the crimes that get them there. Make the prisons a true place of punishment and get rid of all of the social do-gooders that keep claiming that prisoners have all these rights. I’ve seen cases where the convicted felon ended up with more rights than the victims of their crimes did and that folks is a very backwards system. As far as I’m concerned, when a person is found guilty, they lose most of their rights. Yes they have the right to file appeals, but as for their other rights, they forfeited them. It reminds me of what I’ve heard most of my life: ‘if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.’

But in Kentucky, the message being sent is: ‘do the crime and you won’t have to do the time.’

Poster Comment:

So now we are resorting to lettig violent criminals out of jail because the government welfare system won't allow any money for their incarceration.... Isn't there something drastically wrong with this scenario????

Here's the solution: Stop the drug war.

That would double prison capacity and more than double law enforcement budgets so that we can punish people who actually harm others.

I have a better solution.... Since our prison system is so overloaded with "illegals" force their governments into taking them back and making them deal with them.... If they don't want to then cut off their foreign aid and impose sanctions.... (That threat alone would deter most drug runners because their prisons are much, much worse than ours).....

Next make the punishments so severe that people would think 2,3 or 4 times before doing something stupid that would put them in jail in the first place...

Make some lesser jailable offenses fineable offenses instead, and make the fine so bad that they would wish they could go to jail instead or that they had never been born.....

Deterence!!!!!! Deterence!!!!!!! Deterence!!!!!! Deterence!!!!!! Deterence!!!!!!

Nope.

6.4% of state and federal prisoners are illegal aliens.

54.1% of state and federal prisoners are drug offenders.

We need to look at the facts and not let emotional hyperbole guide our decision process.

Why release 'violent" felons? If they have to release prisoners, why not release non violent felons. Some of the cost saving listed above are good, but in addition: How about state farms where prisoners can raise the food they eat, reduce state employee salaries, reduce state prison employees - starting with anyone with the title "Recreation Director", "Recreation Specialist", etc. Sell off all recreation equipment ( they can get exercise on the farm ), throughout the rest of State Govt, there is probably a multitude of places to cut expenses. How about salaries and bennies of a lot of the higher up bureaucrats, etc, etc.

It is indeed curious that the first proposal is to release "violent" felons!?

Why release 'violent" felons?

To "shock" the publick about state funding issues and to encourage additional funding.

If they have to release prisoners, why not release non violent felons.

Of course, they will BUT they aren't going to tell you that.

Because, you are just trading all the other removed "state prison employees" for the new jobs being created by the state. You haven't solved anything else and probably added to the costs.

OK, so what do you propose?

OK, so what do you propose?

First and foremost many prisoners around the country are held in prison because of minor drug abuse/possession: reduce or eliminate some of those felony laws/penalties into minor citations with some form of monetary penalty. This should eliminate about 20% of all prisoners right off the bat and also fill some of the revenues required for more social productive pursuits that fits the role of government.

Second, one of the largest areas of violent crime in America that has filled American state/federal prisons has been ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIMES with felony convictions of rape, murder, narcotic sales and just about anything bizarre from a normal American's perspective. I am not discussing simple misdemeanor offenses which are already plentiful but the following method would reduce those elements too. Here is how: PUT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT/MILITARY ON THE BORDER WITH MACHINE GUN NESTS AND TANKS AND FLAME THROWERS AND BLACK HELICOPTERS WITH ALL KINDS OF OFFENSIVE STRIKE CAPABILITY WITH, OF COURSE, AMERICAN SOLDIERS ARMED WITH FULLY AUTOMATIC AND LOADED M16s (etc.) to guard and defend America's national sovereignty. For illegals already here, HANG THEM in publick and let the People throw rotten tomatoes at the kicking illegals until the swinging corpses are taken down after the flying vultures have picked the bones clean. This would reduce the prison population another 50% of what it is today.

Graphically take publick pictures of these methods (both in military defensive maneuvers and meted out court justice and I bet the CRIME RATE DROPS to about 30% of what is today with just items #1 and #2 cited.

See how nice I can be? That is why most people like my charming personality; I don't beat around the fucking bush, I solve problems with REAL solutions.
