MANCHESTER, N.H. - On a day when several Republican presidential candidates were touting endorsements from socially conservative leaders in Iowa and nationally, Texas Representative Ron Paul made clear why he was not getting them.

Asked about Bob Vander Plaats, president of the Iowa Family Leader group who today endorsed former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, Paul said, “He had decided I wasn’t willing to nationalize enough and I’ve stuck to my guns…. The founders were right in letting states sort out the more difficult problems.”

On both gay marriage and abortion, Paul differs from most of his Republican rivals and from much of the conservative Republican base in not urging a federal law either to define marriage or ban abortion. It is particularly in the area of social issues that Paul’s libertarian leanings are evident.

Today, while speaking to students at Straight A Academy, a small non-traditional private school, a 22-year-old college student who would not give her name quizzed Paul about his position on gay marriage. She noted that the Constitution talks about equality and inalienable rights and asked Paul why he did not want to give every citizen access to marriage.

Paul said he did not support a constitutional amendment allowing or forbidding same sex marriage. “Why should the government be telling you what marriage is all about?” Paul said. “You might have one definition. I have another definition.” Paul said he personally thinks marriage is between a man and a woman, but regulations involving marriage should be up to the states.

“The government should not amend the Constitution to define marriage,” Paul said. “There’s no need to do that, if you accept the idea that people have a right to do what they want as long as they don’t hurt other people, and as long as they don’t force their will on others in either direction.”

Paul advocated a secular agreement – a concept that sounded like a civil union for all couples, though he did not use that phrase. “If there’s a voluntary secular type contract versus a marriage contract, that’s an agreement. You can go to court to resolve the differences and the arguments over it,” he said.

Speaking to reporters later, Paul said, “My personal opinion is government shouldn’t be involved. The whole country would be better off if individuals made those decisions and it was a private matter.”

“People have a right to do what they want, and say what they want, and associate with the people they want. They shouldn’t be inhibited in any way whatsoever,” Paul added.

Asked what would happen to the government-conferred benefits of marriage in such a system, Paul spokesman Kate Schackai said there would be no federally conferred benefits – no tax benefits or other special rights. Issues such as hospital visitation would be left to the states, and could change along with public opinion.

Taking a similar tack on abortion, Paul told reporters that the federal government should not regulate abortions but should leave it to the states. “All acts of violence in this country except for treason and a few other things were meant to be enforced by the states,” Paul said. “I take a strong position that on social issues and economic issues, the states have the authority to be independent.”

Ron Paul this is a dumb ass idea. Go talk to Rand about it. He is smarter then you are on this issue. Sheesh.

Ron Paul this is a dumb ass idea.

It's not Paul's idea, it's Jefferson's, Washington's and Madison's.

It is not their idea for fag marriage. They never ever would have been for that. They couldn't comprehend that a society would become so depraved that it would even consider such a sick notion. That is why they gave us the constitutional amendment process. There should be one banning queer "marriage"? Rand Paul agrees, as he supports one.

Of course not.

It was only their idea that a free people are free to engage in whatever activity they choose as long as they don't harm others or their property, or infringe on the rights of others.

You yourself probably engage in some activity that others find appalling. I hunt, therefor to some, I am a murderer of innocent life. But if I'm not breaking any law, harming another human being or infringing on their rights then it's really none of their business.

Once you hand power over to government, history has shown that you rarely if ever get it back. What if they come after your activities next?

I personally find homosexuality disgusting, but as long as they are not picking my pocket or breaking my leg, it's none of my business what other consenting adults do in their own bedrooms.

I respect your position but disagree with it. Fag marriage will do great harm to society. I will always support a constitutional amendment.

I respect yours as well, even if I disagree with it.

The thing about an amendment is, it will create separate classes of people. It will allow an activity for one group and outlaw that same activity for another group. That is a blatant violation of the 'equal protections' clause, just like hate speech laws and hate crimes.

We denounce it when the left stumps for laws like that, because they create a protected class. Are we on the right really going to ask to create a protected class too?

Utter nonsense. It will use the websters definition of marriage at the founding of the nation. Marriage has always and always be the union of a man and a woman. Any man can marry any woman and vice versa. No not your sister.

It was created in the Bible. The government in "legalizing" this stuff with the power of "color of law" are interfering in our 1st amendment rights. Sometimes called Separation of Church and state.

Since you support same sex marriage. Logic would dictate that you also support brothers marrying their sisters and mothers marrying their kids and fathers marrying their daughters. The same false argument can be made for these perversions too.

Society doesn't have to put up with the whims of perverts.

I don't support same sex marriage or any of the other unions you describe above, and I don't appreciate you inferring that I do.

I don't support terrorism because I want to bring the troops home either.

I hope you were just making a point and I believe that you were.

But tell me, if government gets to control who can marry who, what else should they be able to control? What nationality or color of person you can marry?

What about civil unions? Are you opposed to those too?

Ok. But if you are consistent you would allow states to issue marriage licenses in those mentioned sick practices.

I absolutely would prefer that States decide the issue for themselves.

You speak of perverts, sick practices, etc, and I understand what you mean. If I could wave a magic wand and make homosexuality disappear, I would do it right now. But we know that can't happen.

You see homosexuality as a plague because of your religious beliefs and I respect that opinion. But I don't hold those beliefs and I see homosexuality as more of a disgusting nuisance. Did you know that there are studies that show that in species of animals, homosexuality becomes more prevalent in cases of overpopulation? Maybe this is God's way of controlling the population of a species. Either way I don't believe the fedgov should have more power to control American citizens.

And in the same name of being consistent, and with you being a Christian, maybe you should realize that God created those people too. They are God's creation too. Maybe, just maybe, you should trust that God has a plan and the world is going exactly to that plan.

Actually I don't really care if someone wants to do that. It is on them. But when they try to teach it as normal to kids in school. Or try to force society to accept them and pretend they are married. Then I say screw them.

We are in complete agreement here.

I'm going to bed. Thanks for the discussion. I always enjoy a good one.
