The Great Thanksgiving Hoax

Mises Daily: Saturday, November 20, 1999 by Richard J. Maybury

Each year at this time school children all over America are taught the official Thanksgiving story, and newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it. It is all very colorful and fascinating.

It is also very deceiving. This official story is nothing like what really happened. It is a fairy tale, a whitewashed and sanitized collection of half-truths which divert attention away from Thanksgiving's real meaning.

The official story has the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, coming to America and establishing the Plymouth colony in the winter of 1620-21. This first winter is hard, and half the colonists die. But the survivors are hard working and tenacious, and they learn new farming techniques from the Indians. The harvest of 1621 is bountiful. The Pilgrims hold a celebration, and give thanks to God. They are grateful for the wonderful new abundant land He has given them.

The official story then has the Pilgrims living more or less happily ever after, each year repeating the first Thanksgiving. Other early colonies also have hard times at first, but they soon prosper and adopt the annual tradition of giving thanks for this prosperous new land called America.

The problem with this official story is that the harvest of 1621 was not bountiful, nor were the colonists hardworking or tenacious. 1621 was a famine year and many of the colonists were lazy thieves.

In his 'History of Plymouth Plantation,' the governor of the colony, William Bradford, reported that the colonists went hungry for years, because they refused to work in the fields. They preferred instead to steal food. He says the colony was riddled with "corruption," and with "confusion and discontent." The crops were small because "much was stolen both by night and day, before it became scarce eatable."

In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, "all had their hungry bellies filled," but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims, it was famine and death. The first "Thanksgiving" was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.

But in subsequent years something changes. The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, "instead of famine now God gave them plenty," Bradford wrote, "and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." Thereafter, he wrote, "any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day." In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn.

What happened?

After the poor harvest of 1622, writes Bradford, "they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop." They began to question their form of economic organization.

This had required that "all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, "all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock." A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take out only what he needed.

This "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" was an early form of socialism, and it is why the Pilgrims were starving. Bradford writes that "young men that are most able and fit for labor and service" complained about being forced to "spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children." Also, "the strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes, than he that was weak." So the young and strong refused to work and the total amount of food produced was never adequate.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of famines.

Many early groups of colonists set up socialist states, all with the same terrible results. At Jamestown, established in 1607, out of every shipload of settlers that arrived, less than half would survive their first twelve months in America. Most of the work was being done by only one-fifth of the men, the other four-fifths choosing to be parasites. In the winter of 1609-10, called "The Starving Time," the population fell from five-hundred to sixty.

Then the Jamestown colony was converted to a free market, and the results were every bit as dramatic as those at Plymouth. In 1614, Colony Secretary Ralph Hamor wrote that after the switch there was "plenty of food, which every man by his own industry may easily and doth procure." He said that when the socialist system had prevailed, "we reaped not so much corn from the labors of thirty men as three men have done for themselves now."

Before these free markets were established, the colonists had nothing for which to be thankful. They were in the same situation as Ethiopians are today, and for the same reasons. But after free markets were established, the resulting abundance was so dramatic that the annual Thanksgiving celebrations became common throughout the colonies, and in 1863, Thanksgiving became a national holiday.

Thus the real reason for Thanksgiving, deleted from the official story, is: Socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets, and we thank God we live in a country where we can have them.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford...gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit.

I am surprised to see an argument for the redistribution of corporate wealth to employees of the corporation, promoted on this forum.

Tell your pal, he can shove his turkey up his ass too. He knows even less than the media which presents common folklore about the underpinnings of the day.

The truth is: George Washington (the first POTUS) decreed a Thanksgiving Proclamation on the third Thursday of each November in 1789. It was a celebration of what had been accomplished in the establishment of a new nation, from the Revolutionary war to the new US Constitution (still to be appended 1791 with the Bill of Rights); his proclamation is anywhere on the Internet to be found. It is a day of thanks towards our creator.

You never read this article, and if you did, you didn't understand a word of it.

Of course you're suprised, that's how a socialist brain works. If redistribution of corporate wealth isn't forced upon men of free will (those who give without coercion) by the federal government at the point of a gun, then it's not the same thing.

Hope you enjoy the chains you beg to wear, I'm sure our children of the future will thank you for them.

So dividing up land that wasn't owned by anybody (abandoned by the Indians) and giving it to "Individuals" (Pilgrims) and letting them make it private property and do what they want on it is Socialism????

Looks like I need to go reread the Handbook for Socialists.....

If the land was owned by no body, the the pilgrims wouldn't have needed Bradford to "divide" and "give".

It's redistribution of property. It is spreading the wealth around. For the pilgrims it was having skin in the game and the power to have a direct impact on their own personal well being.

One of the problems the pilgrims and many of the early groups of settlers had, was due to their being long on Christian faith and fatalism (which was popular at that time), and short on basic rough, tough real frontier life experience. They were relying on God through prayer and hard work to miraculously enlightened them and fulfill their needs. But the prayer/learning curve allowed little forgiveness for error.

So then if Bradford's socialistic redistribution of land put an end to their criminal behavior, could it be said that socialism did did more to inspire moral conduct than religion?

James Drake ...the Puritans considered the Pequot outside their polity. Before the con- flict, English patents and charters never granted Puritans formal title to Indian lands; not until they understood themselves as having conquered a sovereign nation in a just war did the Puritans believe they had earned that right.

William Bradford wrote; It was a fearful sight to see them [Pequots] thus frying in the lire and the streams of blood quenching the same, and horrible was the stink and scent thereof; but the victory seemed a sweet sacrifice, and they gave the praise thereof to God, who had wrought so wonderfully for them, thus to enclose their enemies in their hands and give them so speedy a victory over so proud and insulting an enemy.

Funny, I don't see where Jesus condoned this type of behavior in the New Testament.

What..that you're hostile to the Christian religion?

Which Christian religion? There are at least 20,000 at this time.

For myself, I think the "Christian religion" is one of the most formidable areas of mankind's history; so yeah, I am hostile to it. From circa~350 to ~1350, the Holy Roman Catholic Church intentionally created one of the darkest millenniums of human history; if it weren't for Marco Polo unintentionally bringing back the Black Plague from China, the world would still think the Pope is a GOD.

But, the Renaissance era fixed all that. In less than 800 years after the dismissal of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, we have men orbiting the planet and a proper attitude of not subservience to some local priest or bishop or cardinal or pope BUT the declaration that ALL men can find GOD as they see fit.

Well, except for choir boys in the church and their pal Sandusky, of course.

The Christian religion has hurt mankind. Jesus of Nazareth didn't tell his apostles to establish a "religion" did he?

Both of YOU havn't read the Sermon on the Mount, have you? Jesus kicked royal assholes if you take a few moments to read what he said. He was a revolutionary leader for his time; of course, the Rabbinical Rabbis (Sadducees) couldn't have Jesus walking around stirring up trouble, could they?

Have you read the Sermon on the Mount? No? Then shaddup. Jesus lead a revolutionary revolt against both the Roman Empire and the Jewish Sadducees. The Jewish Sadducees permitted the Romans to trample upon their own Jewish People; they were weak-kneed punks of the time.

Oh yeah, they may have crucified Jesus to get him out of the way. But they didn't stop the eventual system of belief; in fact, it can be said that the Roman Empire was devastated within 200 years after the Crucifixion. yet, what rose it's ugly, filthy head was the Holy Roman Catholic Church to fill the vacuum.

Horrible religion and churches. Jesus wanted nothing of the sort.

You never heard of the Jewish faction called "Zealots" have you? They were out of Nazareth (yeah, right where Jesus was born) and kicked ass (as in VIOLENT) against the Romans. Why do you think the Pharisees and Sadducees hated Jesus so much? Because he made a couple of folklore miracles like raising the dead (Lazareth), or making wine out of water or creating more bread and fish out of empty baskets?

If the land was owned by no body, the the pilgrims wouldn't have needed Bradford to "divide" and "give".

So who held the deed to that land before the Pilgrims got there????

Here why don't you tell him!!! Nope. You repeated the crap by the guttural and early Neanderthal man. Since you have an innate instinct for and about him, feel free to exclaim your applause for his single-celled contribution towards our humanist history.

But it's the perfect opportunity for you to interact with the author ..... I'm sure he won't mind being told he's wrong!!!!

Maybe he will even let you re-write and re-publish the new and improved article and then you can post it on here too.....

One of the problems the pilgrims and many of the early groups of settlers had, was due to their being long on Christian faith and fatalism (which was popular at that time), and short on basic rough, tough real frontier life experience.

Considering they were among the first groups to EVER attempt settling in the new world your observation about their lack of experience is irrelevant.

The fact is without their firm religious beliefs the Pilgrims would never have ventured across the vast ocean in search of their 'shining city on the hill'.

Sorry, but the ball is still in your court regarding your need to prove your contention about the Pilgrims.

Four hundred years of American civilization say otherwise.

Meanwhile you've offered zero evidence to support any your tripe..no surprise here.

..and you still can't say a single nice thing about Christian religion can you?

So who held the deed to that land before the Pilgrims got there????

The short answer is the Pilgrims bought the land from the Virginia Company in partnership with their financial backers (I don't think the local Indians were consulted).

The colony "owned" the land in common (yuck, sounds so socialist).

The "Separatists" did come for religious reasons but brought with them others who did not.
