United States News Title: Where Soldiers Come From,a POV documentary The description of this 90 minuted documentary is described as: "The four-year journey of childhood friends who join the National Guard upon high school graduation." It covers their backgrounds, joining the NG,and finally, deploying to Afghanistan as Engineers who work to sweep the roads for IED's,and finally their return to the US. Interviews with girlfriends and parents are included.
Poster Comment: Did anybody else watch this crap covering these slackers and idiots? Although one of these guys seems to be a talented artist,he's still a idiot. He is pursuing a degree and career in "Urban Art and Grafitti". In other words, his future is unemployment and fines for defacing public and private property. He and the others enlist in the NG "because I needed the money",and then they are surprised and pissed-off because they end up getting sent to Afghanistan. Gee,hoodathunk something like that would happen? Weren't they supposed to get paid and receive the GI Bill to pay for their college expenses for doing and risking nothing? Of course, this is all Bush's fault. After all, wasn't it Bush that forced them to enlist in the army? Their parents and girlfriends are no smarter. This takes place starting in 2008,and the political discussion shown is entirely on "who to vote for,Obama or Hillary?" This is before the 2008 primaries, and voting for anyone not a Dim isn't even considered. Then they go to Afghanistan and have a relatively safe tour there riding around in vehicles that are pretty much IED proof. None of them die,but they all do suffer from the effects of concussion due to IED's going off under or near the bomb-proof trucks they ride around in. This can be and IS a serious problem, but IMHO more is being made of it than it deserves. Not everybody ends up being 100 percent disabled due to concussions, even though the documentary seems to imply this. They even have a syndrome named after it now (Traumatic Brain Injury) ,which means shrinks are lining up to grant disability to vets that were within a mile of any explosion so they can rake in the money to deal with a problem there is no cure for. PTSD has became a industry for mental health professionals. Oh,and when they come back Obama is seen coming on a tv in a bar they are in,and giving his "I am increasing the number of soldiers in Afghanistan by 30,000" speech, and they practically worship him. One even says "I love you! You are great! The best president there has ever been." And,of course,it is also Bush's fault that Obama is increasing troop strength. These guys are STILL pissed they were so unfairly sent to a combat zone, and all they did was enlist! Imagine that! It's almost like they will kidnapped right off the street in a modern form of "Shanghaiing" and sent there under chains. These slackers all said they joined the Guard because they couldn't find jobs and needed the money, yet they all seem to have had enough money to buy lots of beer, ride around on snowmobiles, and play other games. If you pay attention, you might get the impression they should have used some of their beer money to paint the houses they live in with their parents, who seem to support them on disability payments and menial job paychecks. WHY is is their 50+ year old parents can work as waitresses, yet THEY can't find menial jobs to pay their way through school? Or at least take the beer money from two weekends of drinking and all their spare time to at least paint their parents freaking house? Frankly, the only reason I don't completely hold these young people in total contempt IS the fact that they are young people and probably don't know any better than to react the way they were raised. Maybe northern Michigan is just too close to Wisconsin and Minnesota and all the commies there for these idiots to ever know any better. It's clear their parents don't know any better. Has anyone else seen this? If you have, what is your take on this? If you haven't seen it,PBS is sure to replay it.
