Maybe there aren't any veterans our here except me.

If you are a veteran, please respond with you your branch, base, unit, and dates of service.

Not at all. I think SneakyPete is a Vietnam vet as I am. But all post WW2 "vets" are victims of a nation that is out-of-control and whose military is at the beckon call of the UN. There hasn't been a REAL war since WW2 is what I am saying.

By the way, if another 1960s hippy dippy turned neo-con war monger (like Michael Medved) "thanks me for my service" I am going to throw up...

So why did you make a thread about being a "vet?"

I thought that I was a cynical SOB, but you've topped me with your post.

Yes, all governments are rotten to the core, including the American government.

However, America is absolutely worth defending.

I've been in 26 countries. I've been in many of those countries several times each.

I have great respect for some of those countries. I also know that America is worth defending.

I understand that you were drafted and I don't agree with that.

My view is that only free people can defend a free society.

I am at least at decade younger than you. As a result, we have a different perspective.

I volunteered. It was the best decision I ever made.

You were drafted and it was horrible.

The neo-cons never served, so they agitate for war. I think that we can both agree that this is wrong.

I hope that you can agree that America is worth defending and that people who volunteer to defend America are worth celebrating. That's why I posted this..

However, America is absolutely worth defending.

Huh? Exactly how is America being defended after WW2 with highly paid mercenaries running around murdering people in other nations, such as South Vietnam in the past and today, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya today? Are discussing this nonsense of the SUPER_DUPER TOP-SECRET NATIONAL SECURITY issue(s) that are never proven or substantiated? Please explain what is being defended.

I've been in 26 countries. I've been in many of those countries several times each.

So what? Why does America have its nose up every asshole around the world?

I have great respect for some of those countries. I also know that America is worth defending.

Yeah? So go over there and defend them on your own dime which is what I tell everyone when they over-glamourize the US military.

I understand that you were drafted and I don't agree with that.

Where is my "than you for your service" platitude?

My view is that only free people can defend a free society.

So let every nation defend themselves. And that is EXACTLY what America needs to do with respect to the Mexican invasion.

I am at least at decade younger than you. As a result, we have a different perspective.

You don't seem to understand that claiming that you are "wet behind the ears" doesn't give you a free excuse to wave around.

I volunteered. It was the best decision I ever made.

Yea! Thank you for your service! Now, go barf, like you claimed to forecast.

You were drafted and it was horrible.

Naw, I scored high on the GT and as a result made out like a bandit.

The neo-cons never served, so they agitate for war. I think that we can both agree that this is wrong.

Yeah. So what? Since WW2 that same sort of mentality still festers within American governance. Yet, WW2 is long over. So are the "good ol' days" when the world depended upon America might to rebuild other nations; today, this sort of thinking is leading us into a turd bowl.

I hope that you can agree that America is worth defending and that people who volunteer to defend America are worth celebrating.

Not American interests around the world. Nope. Never.

I haven't seen squat on Liberty Forum about Veteran's Day.

Thats a shame....

Post of mine on a forum [currently],,,discussing Military History.

****************************************************************************** Was posting on Graf Spee at a Military forum with lots of pro German posters who took apart my position much as you did. One poster there did support my position...which seemed to rally the majority to crush the premise that Graf Spee could have survived the encounter/or break out. While technically correct on their part,....I see war as a reality where [as in the case of Graf Spee] you are a warship.....regardless of what mistakes you have made to be in such an encounter, you fight!

Little Wolves at Samar [Taffy 3 - destroyers Hoel, Heermann and Johnston, and destroyer escorts Dennis, John C. Butler, Raymond, and Samuel B. Roberts.]
...smashed up and wrecked .....still were able to lay the hurt on the superior Japanese naval force. Single destroyers with bridge/ CIC destroyed,...fired independent turret and torpedo attack. wiki excerpt:[ a different battle....but same spirit!]
On 6 October 1943 Chevalier, O'Bannon, and Selfridge (DD-357) intercepted nine Japanese destroyers and destroyer transports attempting to evacuate troops from Vella Lavella, Solomon Islands. Although greatly outnumbered, the American destroyers attacked. After firing half of their torpedoes and scoring several hits with gunfire, the group continued to steam into the line of fire of enemy torpedoes in order to keep their own guns bearing. At approximately 22:05 Chevalier was struck on the port bow by an enemy torpedo which tore her bow off to the bridge, throwing the ship entirely out of control. The destroyer O'Bannon which was following Chevalier could not avoid the damaged destroyer and rammed her in the after engine room, flooding that space and stopping Chevalier's port shaft. While making preparations to abandon ship, Chevalier's skipper ordered the torpedoes in her tubes to be fired at the Japanese destroyer Yugumo. The burning Japanese ship blew up soon after. By 23:26 it was apparent that Chevalier could not be saved and the order was given to abandon Ship. Her crew was picked up by O'Bannon's boats, and Chevalier was sunk the following day by a torpedo from the USS La Vallette.

German U boats....1939 The U-boat War, 1939-42 by John Barratt

Opening Shots excerpt: The net result of all this was that Donitz rarely had more than 20 boats available for Atlantic operations at any one time, of which only about half a dozen would actually be on station.

Although such a small force could hardly bring Britain to her knees, they had a number of individual successes. The British responded to the U-boat threat by forming "hunter-killer" groups, sometimes built around an aircraft carrier, but this policy went into sharp reverse when on September 19th 1939, the U-9 sank the carrier "Courageous" in the Western Approaches, with the loss of 518 men. This was followed quickly by another sharp blow, when on October 14th, Gunther Prien, in U-47 , penetrated the supposedly impregnable defences of the British Home Fleet's principal base at Scapa Flow, and sank the battleship Royal Oak . [end]

15.12. "Graf Spee" is damaged and has put into Montevideo after her action in the South Atlantic. Naval War Staff has asked B.d.U. what support U-boats could give the pocket battleship off the mouth of the La Plata. I have assured Naval War Staff that I will do all I can and I am determined to try everything possible, in spite of the great difficulties which an operation of this kind with U-boats involves. 2 U-boats (U 44 and U 46) can be got ready in time to reach the La Plata at the beginning of February. The operation depends mainly on the question of supply. It will be necessary to refuel on the way out, on the way back and in the operations area. Naval War Staff promises supplies in the Canaries and off the La Plata from "Altmark". This means that the operation can be attempted. It means going into the Tropics and there is no experience of U-boats in these areas. Preparations must be made accordingly. Special attention will have to be paid to victualling supplies, clothing and medical matters in view of the changes of climate, high temperatures and strong sun. Torpedo pistols, electric torpedo batteries and ammunition are also likely to be effected. The necessary steps are being taken immediately. (signed): Dönitz Rear Admiral and B.d.U.

16.12.

The U-boat operation in support of "Graf Spee" has been cancelled. Apparently political considerations make it necessary to decide the pocket battleship's fate sooner.[excerpt end]

The above info from Donitz margins that U boats could have been sent in some form of creative action which of course involves risk and audacity....in a earlier time frame than Donitz stated.

It really comes down to resolve. clearly Langsdorff fainted in the face of the British cruisers, he suicided his ship in a way which left a propaganda trophy win [instead of sinking her at sea with no trophy pics] He commited suicide....which points towards a trend in mindset which indicates to me...he was not a battle commander on par with the Command shown by the plucky tin cans of the USN listed out above in their actions.

Your points made concerning the condition of the British cruisers....changes with a few more salvo's or torpedo's fired by Graf Spee. Its possible Graf Spee could have seriously damaged these British cruisers...even if we card it as luck. Graf Spee could have slipped away....wounded....and stopped other shipping in the south atlantic to take useable fuel or machinery to bodge repair her ship. I can't off hand remember the names...I believe there were 2 German freighter type ships in the vicinity of La Plata region in that time window. Graf Spee could have gone north near the African coast on obtained fuel and repairs to close the distance for U Boat support.

Small U.S. ships like USS Luzon PR-7- Yangtze River Patrol, Excerpt: She remained off Shanghai until 29 November 1941 when she departed for the Philippines.

Luzon arrived at Manila 30 December, just 23 short, trying days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States pellmell into World War II. She then began patrol operations in the waters of the Philippines, assisting the heroic but unsuccessful defense of both Bataan, from 1 February until the surrender of the peninsula to the Japanese 9 April, and Corregidor, from the beginning evacuations of that entrance island to Manila Bay until the enemy landings 5 May.[end]

little River Gun Boat Luzon .....working her way past Japans navy now swarming that region after Dec 7..... : )

so ya.....I read the can do,....we'll find a way, were damaged...but we got some fight left, were finished.....fire the torpedo's and abandon ship.

You can change the outcome.......if you gut up and have the resolve.

or you can run away,....and commit suicide.[end]
Parrot: here is at least one poster who gets it....others are Uber hair on fire...who do not like history revised.

Poster comment:
The Graff Spee never would have won because her captain and crew lacked the resolve of the British navy. The Spee ran rather than fought. If the Captain of the Rawalpindi had been in charge of the Spee the outcome may have been different because when his AMC with 8 x 6in was told to surrender to the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst with 9 x11in and 16x 5.9in apiece he turned into them and attacked rather than run or surrender.

Parrot: On this Veterans day...we remember the Spirit of the fighting men of the U.S.,....who would not quit in the face of the insurmountable,....who fought till the very last,...who changed the outcome of battle which appeared defeat.

Yeah right. Since WW2, the US military machine is considered an expendable piece of garbage; that is the common man is convinced to goto warzones around the world and that they may die fighting for NOTHING, their coffins are often draped in some sort of voo-doo called the UN or SEATO or NATO or some other sort of BS.

The US Congress has NEVER created an ACT of WAR since WW2. American flesh is just a causality in a fucking political game of empire.

I have no sympathy for any of you that may have sob or boo-hoo in these issues. You don't understand anything.

I am certainly NOT defending the U.S. government's foreign policy misadventures.

America is worth defending. Not the government. Not the politicians. Not the bureaucrats. But, the Constitution and the people.

We need to separate the horrible policies the politicians have foisted on the country from the willingness of America kids to defend the country.

Yes, sometimes those kids have lost their lives because the idiot politicians are engaged in a giant game of Risk. Yes, the politicians should be condemned, but not the kids in uniform.

Then why did you join the minutemen?

Most of us that care about the nation do something based upon personal initiative from time time to time; the reasons are not just personal, too. My reasons are often political that show how ineffective ANY of us are towards changing the course of this massive government that ignores our own borders while shipping off TRILLIONS of dollars on pallets carted off by derelicts and scoundrels.

Even before the Minutemen, I was fairely good at a couple of Washington DC marches ... that is to say, before the Iraqi conflict. Ask most that know me.

Years ago, I learned that the political ping/pong game of politics such as the GOP vs. the Dems or any such nonsense is built into the political system of America; neither political party ever hopes to solve actual problems. The real goal is how "THEY" can swing your vote into an abyss, as nothing is ever solved.

There are some people who perceive there to be threats. And their are threats. A nuclear Iran is a threat if you believe it or not.

What I am asking do you think Israel would attack us? Or are they a threat because you perceive them to pull us into wars that we shouldn't be in?

I think Iran is a direct threat. And if over time they build missiles that could reach here they would potentially use them.

I understand that Iran legitimately sees us as a threat to them also.

Do you think that they will never have missiles that can reach America?

When did Iran attack another county?

How many times has America attacked another country in the past 50 years?

Q.E.D.

hen why did you join the minutemen?

I would say that you really DO think America is worth defending. Or you wouldn't be here stating your values and beliefs passionately.

Do you see Israel as a direct thread? Or indirect?

Neither. ISRAEL IS AN INTERNAL THREAT TO US NATIONAL AFFAIRS. For some strange reason, the USA permits Zionists to dictate the TOP LEVEL POLICIES of America.

Of course, you like that. You think, they are chosen. ROTFL.

Iran attacks other nations through surrogates. They hope to change that with nuclear weapons.

I think the world would be WORSE off if Iran had nukes. I don't think any muslim nation should have nukes.

You think Ohole is an Israel agent or something? That is nuts. He is a muslim plant if anything.

We give more to arab nations then Israel in foreign aid.

We should end it all though.

As always, you don't add much to the debates. You just add defensive SHIT that proves your own incapability to hold a substantive argument.
