CBS/AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower.

Paterno says he should have done more. Spanier has said he was not told the details of the attack.

Sandusky has denied the charges.

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will serve as interim coach while Rodney Erickson will serve as interim school president.

Earlier in the day, Paterno said in a statement he was "absolutely devastated" by the case, in which Sandusky, his onetime heir apparent was charged with molesting eight boys in 15 years, with some of the alleged abuse taking place at the Penn State football complex.

"This is a tragedy," Paterno said. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

John Surma, the vice chair of the board of trustees said, "these decisions were made after careful deliberations and in the best interests of the university as a whole."

I took away Freds ability to post news articles. I saw him asking someone to post this. So I posted it for Fred.

I've never even heard of this guy before.

I mean, where do you live?

What do you do, that you think this has zero bearing on your life.

No cussing or you go to hell.

Starting children charities in order to have easy access to ass raping kids and pimp them to your rich donors...no big deal.

Like I said, this is Planet Hell...ruled by psychopaths...and the gods aren't very nice.

You thought I was joking, huh?

This is it. The Moment. College Football has/is being given a Free Ride.

And to ignore this now...where do these people live...what do they do that they think they won't be affected by this?

The state will have to get involved.

Sports, especially football sports, is out of control now.

And CFB is a tight club. They all knew something...;}

And that Penn State is removing McQueary from the Nebraska game bacause of 'death threats' is disingenious.

It shows they're still clueless and think they can get this back on track with minimal damage when their ENTIRE SCHOOL is now on the line.

Don't colleges belong to something like leagues (I ain't no football fan)? The organization kick Penn State out.

Penn State is B1G (Big Ten) Conference.

AAMOF Ohio State weblogs have been on top of this.

But for Penn State to get 'kicked out' of the Big Ten?

No. Just fire everyone and give the Sports Division the Death Penalty.

Hire completely new, Top to Bottom....but we're so far away from that. This is organized crime, which is why I've followed it...

You get to be Number One in your state...How do people know this?

I guess some little boy victims aren't as important as a football program.

Thinking now is that it's the Entire GD Town/County of PSU.

The PSU Mafia is real and ruthless.

McQueary himself could've been one of Sandusky's Victims...it fits....;}

Molested (weak asses term) players could be on the field tomorrow for PSU....;}

"This is so far beyond sports and Penn State football and all that other meaningless shit. If all these sort of new reports surfacing are true this is just one of the biggest scandals ever. Period. Do you understand the extent of a cover up of this magnitude? Its the coaches, the school, the law enforcement, the city, the government. I’m seriously starting to think that Ray Gricar’s disappearance really is connected to all this. And I just can’t even imagine the sort of shit thats gonna continue to surface. All these scandals always start with one story and you dig deeper and find much worse allegations, right? Well when the first report was 10 boys being sodomized, how much uglier can this get? Looks like we’re gonna start with pimping out boys and I’m not even kidding I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up with the disappearance of a Pennsylvania DA. Forget football coaches they should just shut down the whole goddam city. Can you do that? Is that possible? Just throw everyone in jail to be safe and call it a day."

And BTW, hearing the Big 10 could be telling PSU that giving football a rest for a couple of years might be a good thing....

I agree. The cover-up is a crime carried out by a culture so sick it is willing to sacrifice little boys to save an image.

Works for me...Old boys (retarded by huge wealth) looking for young boys...

Sandusky liked 10-12 black tall and slender.

Promised them Walk On status, so they may even be on the Field at Noon....;}

the financial system as we know it can not be saved....

"-The CME steps up for $300 large and they don’t have to? Nobody does that. There is more to this offer than meets the eye. . -I can’t see how the CME can be held liable for MF customer losses. Therefore the money is an attempt to preserve the integrity of the exchange and to protect its members. . -It’s possible that the CME action was done with a gun to their head. Absent a fix (partial or otherwise) a systemic risk was (is) a consequence. The only one who could hold a gun in this discussion is Treasury. .
