As politicians in Washington, D.C., debate how to shrink the size of government, their counterparts in statehouses have actually been doing it. Public-sector jobs now account for the smallest share of the nation's employment since the 2008 financial crisis, according to new data released yesterday.

In October, the public sector cut 24,000 jobs while private industry continued adding jobs at a steady clip, the Labor Department said yesterday. The nation's unemployment rate fell slightly to 9 percent, but it would have been 8.7 percent had state and local governments not contracted the past two years.

Amid lower tax revenue due to the recession, state and local governments have cut 455,000 jobs since the beginning of 2010.

Overall, the proportion of government jobs fell to 16.7 percent in October, its lowest level in three years. The cuts are a victory for those who argue for a leaner public sector, but they have also weighed down the overall job market.

Good. Shrink more. Like 80 percent more. Still to many lazy government workers. They are lazy be definition.

These are state & local govt. employees. The more they dump the better, but it's the federal parasites that are doing the most damage.

My father and uncle worked for the governemnt. They both told me that most government workers are lazy. Not them though.

So then you're holding your father and uncle responsible for what you write?

The laziest and often drunkest employees I've ever seen, worked for PG and E. And Californians are now bearing the brunt.

You've probably never been to the BMV.

Union workers are also very lazy. Had to get some metal from Ohio metal one time. It is now called alro steel or something. Anyway we needed a few rolls of metal. The rolls were sitting across the warehouse in plain view. The guy could have went over there and got our metal. But instead he stood there because it wasn't his job. We had to wait for 15 min or so for the proper person to give us the metal. We could have walked over and picked it up ourselves in about 2 min. But unions put laziness into contracts.

el-Tubo isn't going to like this. He already called Bialek's 13 year old son a "brownshirt".

This is odd, because usually el-Tubo likes 13 year old boys.

You seem to forget that management signs off on all those Union employee contracts. I could also cite ancedotal evidence all day long for both sides.

I still would like to see you last one day working for the Dept of Corrections or Mental Health.

I'd like to see you last 20 min working on a rubber roof in August.

You forget I actually built a house from the ground up. Ever spend 12 hours a day for two weeks digging trenches, putting in foundation, and setting block in 100 degree heat? And yes I have reroofed a house, my own in fact and it was done in late September. 40x20 and was completed in three days by two of us.

The only thing is...... I wasn't expected to possibly give my life for my roof as a condition of employment.

all anyone has to do is go to any DMV in any State and you'll learn firsthand what a bunch of lazy, uneducated bunch of worthless losers your average government worker is.

no one capable of finding a real job would ever work for the government.

Yet Bush made all you accountants defacto gov employees.

Did those nasty DMV employees make you take a number and wait in line? Poor baby ....you really deserve your very own technician whose only job is just waiting for you to appear..

Do it by mail next time or make an appointment.

I have been to my local DMV lately. They were polite, efficient, knowledgeable, and untangled a rather complex problem on the spot.

On the other hand, an AT&T employee told me that if I wanted to keep my present number when I moved, they would have to string a phone line from my old residence to my new home.

Sears and Comcast - don't even get me started.

Try cancelling Sirius Satellite Radio. I'll take an appointment at the DMV any day.

If my experience over the past decade or so is any indication, the smart people are opting for the benefits and security government jobs offer, while those who can't pass the civil service exams are working part time for low wages in the private sector.

You use your employees to run personal errands? I hope you aren't scamming the IRS with this deduction.

sorry teabagging queen but my employees doing personal errands for me is totally deductible since they contribute to my revenue generating capability.

no need to worry on your end however, since my deductions don't affect the "earned income credit" your broke ass gets every year.

I didn't know that one was allowed earned income credits if one had a business.
