Scott Olsen is the Marine Corps veteran critically injured at Occupy Oakland Tuesday night, during a confrontation between the protesters and the police. The latest news is good: his condition has been upgraded from critical to fair and he is apparently conscious and able to respond to doctors and family members. I sincerely wish him a full recovery, and I also hope that a proper investigation is conducted to determine whether police misconduct is responsible for his injuries. But I ran across something this evening that may add a new dimension to this story. It has been widely reported that Olsen is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. But apparently his opposition to the U.S. military and the Marine Corps in which he served runs a little deeper. The site is no longer live, but Olsen was the founder of IHateTheMarineCorps.com, a private user forum apparently dedicated to bashing the Marine Corps. Prediction: Attempts to portray this 'useful idiot' as a patriotic marine will fall flat.

I served nine years that comprised of active enlistment, attached to active duty component and service training school time. And I did four years as mobilization day personnel as part timers in the Guard and reserve are called technically. I wanted to do twenty years, but I gave it up after Panama convinced me my then Commander in Chief, GHW Bush was the head of a crime family that never should of gotten into the White House. You'd be surprised, many people like this former Marine not only have a painful love/hate relationship with the Corp; they also go back in. much like people fight, divorce, and then remarry. Face it, you are trying to spin this politically to try to discredit the legitimate anger and focus of the OWS movement counting on being able to play on the perspective of the many out there who never served. Nice try, but you will find that people are smarter then you think.

The one percenter's are trying to head off the inevitable veteran backlash, as they have finally learned the lessons of the Free Speech and anti Vietnam War movements.

oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense, we veterans are going to side with the aholes who have nothing but disdain for us. friggin hippies sucked in the sixties and their punk ass grandchildren suck even worse today.
There are an epic number of homeless veterans, including for the first time a record number of women homeless vets. I know what homelessness feels like. I came home from the PMOS 31C Single Channel Radio Operator School* at Ft. Gordon, GA to Eugene in the Fall when the students had made the vacancy rate next to zero for houses and apartments. I had to sleep on a picnic table for almost a month on the north bank of the Willamette River across from Skinner's Butte Park while I hunted desperately for a place to live. I didn't like it much, and the empathy I got was schooling in and of itself. It is why I have worked as a volunteer front desk clerk at White Bird Clinic, worked hospitality at the Family Dining Center for Food For Lane County, and am helping with Occupy Eugene. Veterans do more then their fair share of suffering for sacrificing years they could be at home getting established in the community with a job, family and home like those who never went in. We vets know this, and they can try to head veterans off at the pass, but I have news for them; we are way ahead of them and already know OWS is a movement with veracity and validity to it. And if they try to crush us and create another debacle like the attack on Great Depression Bonus March, that event will look like a Sunday School picnic in comparison. As goes the motto of the 2nd battalion 5th Marines motto and war cry goes, "Retreat HELL" -- we just got here. * This Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) school is necessary to have to go to the SFQC to get the SF MOS of 18E.
