The cold is coming -- and they know it. As the Occupy Wall Street protesters head into their fourth week, the camp is preparing to dig in for the long haul. Saturday, thoughts were turning to basic human needs and ways to plan and strategize for the challenges ahead. At Saturday's 9 a.m. coordination meeting, representatives on the numerous task forces dealt with the need for more donations of sleeping bags, ground pads and shoes. Right now there's an oversupply of socks, T-shirts and thermal blankets. "The cold is definitely a concern for all of us," Olivia Nole-Malpezzi, 18, of Rochester said later. "We definitely need to prepare for the winter, mentally and physically. Donations are everything to us." The challenges aren't deterring one Long Island protester. "It's important," said Roy Sharkey, 51, of St. James. "I want this to be effective and result in some kind of change. I want to make a statement that's loud and clear and right, for my children," said the father of two, a carpenter and part-time musician now on disability. Also discussed at the coordination meeting were compost, recycling, funding, and expanding the kitchen area to accommodate food donations. "We're feeding 2,000 people a day and growing but we need to coordinate with sanitation to get the trash out. We're spilling into the areas where people sleep," said a kitchen crew representative, who gave her name as Tami. With numbers swelling, there are concerns the protest may soon outgrow Zuccotti Park, a sliver of open space amid lower Manhattan's canyons. "If we do get to the point when we reach capacity, we're going to have to look for other venues to legally occupy," said Nicole Pace, 23, a Patchogue native now living in Harlem. How long protesters can occupy the park may depend on the way they manage relationships with neighbors, businesses and the police. Though there have been complaints of graffiti and bathroom damage from some nearby restaurants and fast-food outlets, store managers interviewed Saturday spoke of an upside -- increased business. Kevin Crossan, general manager of Modell's lower Manhattan store, said his store had requested extra stock of cold-weather clothing, sleeping bags and camping gear. Hundreds of the protesters embarked Saturday on a 2-mile march through the tony SoHo shopping district to Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. The NYPD said that as of 7:15 p.m. Saturday, no arrests had been made. Once at the park, the workings of the protest were explained to an audience of more than 2,000, with bystanders encouraged to join the occupation. The second edition of the group's newspaper, The Occupied Wall Street Journal, was handed out. About 25,000 copies of the paper were printed and it also was available in Spanish. Onlooker Bob Griffith, 49, an Episcopal priest based in Brooklyn, said he was impressed by the occupiers' general demeanor. "It's encouraging to me to see this many young people taking part in the democratic process," he said. Eluding to the tumultuous events of the Arab Spring, he added: "You never know when something is beginning until after the fact . . . But we're lucky to be able to do this here. It's exciting." They'll all be heading to winter in Florida with their SS checks and Medicare.
You point out a very important difference between the two protest movements. Teahadists are the sort the rich can keep taking from knowing that though they have less they will work to defend it and only make a little noise about being vectored to vote the way the wealthiest paid for power elite wants them to. They are not at the "give me liberty, ot give me death" point. In fact I doubt Patrick Henry would want to know these guys. The occupation movement eliminates from people ready to live off the land that is the streets. many among them know the experiance of being set free by losing it all. It cannot be controlled and is going to get bigger. And has they get worried, they will use increasing force and measures forcing the game to get brutal enough people will want to find an end to the conflict. If a protest movement is motivated enough, it will react to the heavy handed treatment by evolving into an insurgency. Hopefully thing won't get that bad, but if it does, so be it.
This is true, SS and medicare is only bad if the liberals or their alleged pawns get it.
The "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrators who have been camping in Lower Manhattan for more than three weeks to protest the country's economic inequality are once again marching to Washington Square Park today, and members of the clergy are joining them in solidarity. The group is retracting the same path it took yesterday, to go from the privately owned Zuccotti Park to Greenwich Village to hold a so-called "general assembly" in Washington Square Park. At midnight, Washington Square Park closes to the public. Police say there were no arrests yesterday, compared to the past two Saturdays, when hundreds of protesters were arrested. While the demonstrators do not have a common set of goals, individual protesters say they have their own reasons for being part of the ongoing movement. "Well, I'm down here because Wall Street's been bailed out, and the American people have been sold out," said one protester. "I'm a former United States Marine.... I love the country, I love the people, but the government is criminal." "I am currently a law student, I'm at law school, and it is taking a lot to adjust to make that possible in terms of education, because of the debt," said another protester. "The interesting thing about our school is that we have a social mission. And a lot of us would like to serve that social mission upon entering law school, but we can't because we need to find a job that's going to satisfy our debt, so we won't be in it for 25 years." "Message is, you know, I was a business owner and lost my business because of the economy. My dad's house is in foreclosure because of the economy and being taken away from him right now, and there's just too much money in too little pockets," said a third. For more than three weeks, protesters have been camping out at Zuccotti Park, and they have dealt with food preparation, cleanliness and even creating their own independent media. Some Lower Manhattan residents say they are concerned about noise pollution and sanitary conditions at Zuccotti Park, but others say the movement will ensure a more equal society. "I'm not necessarily against them," said one Lower Manhattan resident. "Maybe this time it's needed." "A lot of the Wall Street firms no longer work on Wall Street, and I think a lot of these people don't realize that," said another. "This is actually more of a neighborhood now." The Occupy Wall Street has received support from some influential politicians, including House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. In her first public comments on the demonstrations, Pelosi said she agrees with the movement. However, some Republicans who previously supported the Tea Party demonstrations said the latest gatherings are just unorganized. "I went by one of the protests in Washington, D.C. on Friday and I saw a lot of signs from unions that were there, so I don't know how spontaneous these protests were," said Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. "But it seems to me their anger should be directed at the White House, because Barack Obama's policies have put us in one of the worst tailspins economically.... Maybe that's why the protests that I saw was within shouting distance of the White House." House Majority Leader Eric Cantor criticized the protesters' message as divisive, saying that condoning the demonstrations amounted to pitting "Americans against Americans." Cantor hates it when the victims take after the thieves. I guess these lottle old religious leaders hate the corporate version of American wealth distribution of $ 9.99 for me, a penny for you. The powers that be have a real problem on their hand when a movement captures the imagination as this one has.

His scandalous handling of the Gulf oil spill? His frittering away of the $800 billion dollar "Stimulus" that stimulated jacksquat? 0bama's sabotage and destruction of the economy? 0bama's warmongering in Libya, Iran, and the HIGH death toll in Afghanistan since he's been President? It is PAID for. Creating a "crisis movement" is the MO of you Commies, Mike. It CAN and SHOULD be controlled, otherwise the goobermint itself is obviously in on this charade and stunt. Sure they can fake malfeasance, but under the governance of 0bama's Commie regime (and that's what it is indeed), we can expect ANY thing - including martial law.

OWS seems to have the average Tea Bagger's Depends in a wad. Tea Baggers seem to only be capable of typing inane posts on internet forums in response to the perceived dissing of those they call their 'political Messiahs' but the OWSers are proving to be people of action.
They can move to the subway from before until after rush hour. For the price of a token they can just take up space on the cars, riding them for a few hours as Wall Street commuters are greeted by a stream of full cars.

While some of the 1% make some extreme points..... most of what these Americans are speaking out about is correct. They have the balls to take to the streets instead of sitting in their basements posting to online forums...... I think I'm going to redirect my "political contributions" and my "tithing" and sent the money to these Americans instead....
