Crowd calls Cheney a war criminal at book event

Protesters waved placards, chanted slogans, banged drums and blew whistles outside one of Vancouver's most exclusive clubs where former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney was promoting his new memoir Monday evening.

Peace activists blocked the front and back entrances to the Vancouver Club, calling for Cheney's arrest for war crimes and booing guests as they arrived at the $500-a-ticket dinner.

Cheney is in town to promote his new book "In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir."

At one point, protesters got into a brief scuffle with police when nearly 20 people sat down on a sidewalk, blocking the rear driveway leading into the Vancouver Club.

"We're very angry that he has chosen Vancouver as the first location outside of the United States to do a book tour event, and we feel it's important that citizens of Vancouver show that we won't tolerate a war criminal coming and speaking in our town," said Derrick O'Keefe, co-chair of the StopWar Coalition.

"We hope to set an example that Cheney doesn't see Canada as a safe haven."

The sold-out event was organized by the Bon Mot Book Club.

The club's founder, Leah Costello, said members decided to invite Cheney because of the anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks and the release of his book.

She described the Monday night event as a moderated question-and-answer session.

Peace activists accuse Cheney of war crimes for authorizing and endorsing the use of water boarding and sleep deprivation against detainees while serving in George W. Bush's administration.

The former vice-president has vigorously defended interrogation techniques used on detainees during the Bush years, claiming they saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Gail Davidson, a member of Lawyers Against the War, said she wrote to members of the Conservative government, outlining the federal law that prohibits Cheney from entering Canada.

"Canada has a duty globally to take measures to effectively prevent and punish torture."

Davidson attended the protest and said she hopes it raises awareness about federal laws prohibiting torture.

Jim Nugent, a resident of Columbus, Ohio who watched the protest from across the street from the Vancouver Club, was not a Cheney fan.

"Obviously he is not a very popular man, Mr. Cheney is not. I'm glad to see it here. I'm just sad that your prime minister allowed him into your country."

Nugent said he didn't feel any anti-Americanism at the rally and criticized the Bush administration for the "lies" that led the U.S. into Iraq and the squandering of the country's treasury.

"So many things occurred under that administration. We could go on for hours," he said.

Monitoring the protest and the police presence Monday evening were members of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association who wore orange shirts.

This past weekend, Human Rights Watch urged the federal government to bring criminal charges against Cheney, accusing him of playing a role in the torture of detainees.

Don Davies, the NDP immigration critic, also argued that Cheney should not have been allowed into Canada.

Davies said the water boarding and sleep deprivation techniques that Cheney authorized violated both Canadian and international law.

Where are the criminal charges by blind deaf and dumb Human Rights Watch against 0bama as he continues to bomb and murder the Libyan people - including children?

Come on you two - have you double standards like Human Rights Watch?

The air support President Obama signed on for was under the aupices of a NATO action. I have problems with the action in Lybia, but Obama's support of this falls far short of as inherently evil a number of counts of war crimes Bush and Cheney's signing on for with the NeoCon planned invasion of Iraq that he intended on doing as soon as possible in his presidency regardless of what else happened.

You are trying for a 'gotcha' moment here in these posts. Now, what's that you always claim liberals are guilty of? tatics like that you are going for here?

"Auspices" is the key word. 0bama is a warmonger and liar, and NO different than either Dubya or Cheney. They invaded "under the auspices" of WMD, remember? Bullsh*t in both cases.

I am no friend of either Dubya or Cheney...I realize the invasion of Iran was pre-planned before 9/11.

That said, I would say EVERY war action in the ME - including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya - was/is inherently wrong and NOT in the interest of the US.

I am looking for intellectual honesty and consistency. You can't deal with both Bush and 0bama and cover but one eye.

WMD which were ficticious from the get go. Dispite the problems with who gets power and the things they are doing with it in Lybia, NATO was reacting to obvious international war crimes against their own people like we see going on in Israel and Syria.

It's genesis was far more complex with a far broader field of participants to make this happen then we had in the Iraq invasion.

Any POTUS that participates in violations of International law regarding the conduct of war should be held responcible for having done so. including President Obama.

One reason I am supporting Dr. Paul and will vote for him should he get the Rebublican nomination is the war process we go through to decide on where and how we go to war and for what needs a careful reexamination, to ay the least.

We need to stop being in the middle of these wars unless it is clearly in the best interest of the world, and we should not do it alone.

We should also rein in Israel and stop their saber rattling and press them to obey laws concerning human rights regarding how they treat the Palistinian people. They also need to get out of the apartheid business strangling the very ability to just live their lives in peace.

Israel has too much influence in what we do and how we do it internationally; and they are long overdue a good session of 'tough love.'

Agreed.

Aww Mike, uncover your other eye. NATO wasn't "obviously reacting" to anything. "International crimes" is selective and in the eye of the beholder (or whomever pays to call the shots.) This is why genocide against Africa's Christians by Muslims in Nigeria and the Sudan has been totally ignored for well over a decade.

NATO is but a military arm of the UN and mercenary tool globalists.

One reason I am supporting Dr. Paul and will vote for him should he get the Rebublican nomination is the war process we go through to decide on where and how we go to war and for what needs a careful reexamination, to ay the least.

I commend your reasoning.

We need to stop being in the middle of these wars unless it is clearly in the best interest of the world, and we should not do it alone.

"Best interest" of whom?? Shouldn't that be the USA? Why must we be dragged into ME tribal spats and oil-driven territorial BS constantly??

We should also rein in Israel and stop their saber rattling and press them to obey laws concerning human rights regarding how they treat the Palistinian people. They also need to get out of the apartheid business strangling the very ability to just live their lives in peace.

I think Israel is already "reigned in" and surrounded by hostile neighbors - including the Palis. What do you want the Israelis to do? STFU and Surrender to Muslims who've stated their goal is to Drive them into the sea"? They have a House and a nation to defend just like the rest of us.

Tell me - what industries does "Palestine" produce? That's right - ZERO. They are a contrived ethnicity without any means to support their so-called phantom "nation." More than that, they artificially survive on charity care from the UN and Western nations. They have NEVER been a "nation"; They are a territorial ethnic group. Should the "Amish" declare Lancaster County in PA their "nation"?

As to "apartheid," you're kidding, right? Saudi Arabia and other Muslim nations ALL practice "apartheid" to even greater extent. There is at least Muslim reps in Israel's Knesset and Muslims do own businesses. That said MANY nations practice some form of "apartheid" or separatism. Hell, what do you think the Congressional Black Caucus and BET advocate?

Israel has too much influence in what we do and how we do it internationally; and they are long overdue a good session of 'tough love.'

On this I also agree.

Dispite the problems with who gets power and the things they are doing with it in Lybia,

Yeah, who cares that the people who take over are not only going to do the same things to their people and maybe even be worse, the important thing here is people who don't live in Libya get to decide who and what kind of government the Libyan people live and die under.

Besides, the new Maximum Leader is not only going to be a DIFFERENT dark guy,he may even be darker! Bonus points! Bonus points!

And if Libya becomes a even more dangerous police state that endangers the west even more than under the cowardly loon that was the previous Maximum Leader, that seems like a reasonable price to pay in order for European bankers to get in on Libyan oil so they can profit even more, right?

Hey! We all KNOW this is about truth, justice, and equality, and that there are no international banks and corporations lurking in the background and prodding everybody with a stick, right?

I suspect "human rights" will just be bursting out all over once the new dictator takes over.

NATO was reacting to obvious international war crimes against their own people like we see going on in Israel and Syria.

Uhhhhh....,uhhhhh.....,BullBarack. Are you trying to get me to hit the humor ping list?

Mike,I have known you on the internet for a long time now,and there is no freaking way you are really that naive.

WHEN did Europe scream for an invasion of China over the way they treat their citizxens,or the people of Tibet?

WHEN were the Europeans screaming for any invasion of the old USSR,back when they held half of Europe in slavery?

How about an invasion of Cuba? South Africa? Rhodesia? Indonesia? ANY Middle Eastern country?
