Saudi Arabia will allow women to stand for election and vote, the king announced on Sunday, in a significant policy shift in the conservative Islamic kingdom. In a five-minute speech, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud said women will also take part in the next session of the unelected, advisory Shura Council, which vets legislation but has no binding powers. "Because we refuse to marginalize women in society in all roles that comply with sharia, we have decided, after deliberation with our senior ulama (clerics) and others... to involve women in the Shura Council as members, starting from the next term," he said in a speech delivered to the advisory body. "Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote." Women's rights are regarded as a litmus test for the government's appetite for social and political reform. Saudi Arabia adheres to a strict version of Islamic law that enforces the segregation of the sexes. "This is great news," said Wajeha al-Huwaider, a Saudi writer and women's rights activist. "Women's voices will finally be heard. "Now it is time to remove other barriers like not allowing women to drive cars and not being able to function, to live a normal life without male guardians."

This is great to see happen, but it also a change there that is horribly long overdue. And this country has far to go before they are recognized internationally as a place where human rights are safeguared and respected.
What is your FUCKING problem? Those voting "rights" are given by a kingdom under tight control of a KING and thousands of "princes" there will be no change at all. Just like voting for "change" in this FUCKING country. Change doesn't happen with a chad puncher; change happens based upon ACTION.
When only a few control most media and the authorities become violently oppressive and won't allow even constitutionaal rights to free speech and assembly, that is a given.

Next time around, there shall be voter's REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS not only to vote but also even run for any elected office.
History is full of examples of once proud nations that have been annihilated - few, if any, were brought down by just anyone voting.

So many here have forgotten (or more likely are ignorant of) the practice of revenue stamps that was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries when we were such a 'proud nation'.
America needs tax increases to justify the platforms of endless war and war preparation around the world; but no other nation is this senseless; America has been used by special interests that have clogged the information highway with lies, bullshit and endless propaganda to keep us at war protecting interests that have nothing to do with national security. And the gullible masses believe in that BULLSHIT; and they vote for it. You can cram your vote up your ass for all I care.
