ORLANDO – The alarm bells are ringing for Rick Perry’s presidential campaign.

The Texas governor, who leaped to the top of national polls immediately after his August kickoff, finds himself suddenly reeling from a pair of setbacks in the country’s most prominent political battleground.

First, Perry drew a round of scathing reviews for his unfocused debate performance in Orlando Thursday night. Then he suffered a thumping defeat in the Florida GOP’s straw poll – to long-shot candidate Herman Cain, no less – that amounted to a vote of no confidence from dissatisfied activists.

The back to back stumbles added up to the worst week of Perry’s still-young White House bid, and left party strategists wondering what he can do to bounce back.

“Perry’s showing in the straw poll was disastrous. He was here, he worked the crowd, and it just proves that the debate performance really undermined his support,” said Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who was at the straw poll in Orlando this weekend. “Perry’s gotta retool, reorganize and retrench very quickly.”

Said one prominent conservative activist: “They’ve really got to go into damage control mode and right this ship, and they’ve got a relatively brief amount of time to do it. And if they don’t, I think he’s done.”

Would you consider voting for Christie?

Yes, he doesn't appear to be insane like most GOP candidates. But given his stance on things like gun control, he's never going to get the GOP nomination.

Other than his seeming ability to be a leader, is there any issue in which you believe Christie's position is substantially different from Obama's?

Christie would be just as comfortable with a D after his name - which I suppose is why you like him.

(But I'd wager in a Christie/Obama matchup, you'd still vote for Obama)

Indistinguishable from your average Democrat, Stone.

Its not the only liberal position he holds btw.

No chance I'd vote for him to be President.

As I've said since 2008, RINO Romney will be the nominee.

A few years ago Boof wrote some self-serving screed about how he wouldn't be voting for the GOP and wouid be, in fact, voting for whatever Dem opposed some Ohio pol.

Short story long is that it was bullshit. He did exactly what he claimed he wouldn't do.

He has supported the assault weapons ban, is trying to uphold Corzine's one-gun-a-month law, opposes concealed carry.

But Ann Coulter likes him.

I always vote, Stone.

but no, I won't vote for Christie. I think he's great for a state dominated by Democrat voters. But I think he'd sign off on another round of gun banning/restrictions. I think he's flat out insane as it relates to the hoax Global Warming/Climate change bullshit.

I think he's a moderate Republican, which means he'd be just as happy as a liberal Democrat on most of the issues important to me.

No thanks. I won't vote for him. I swore I wouldn't do it again after I voted for McCain, and was honestly ashamed of myself walking out of the voting booth in 08.

you are aware that Cain supports the establishment of a government run retirement program with an individual mandate requiring everyone to contribute a fixed amount of their income?

(That's the Chilean model BTW).

Chilean workers must pay in 10% of their wages (they can send up to 20%) to one of several conservatively managed and regulated pension funds. From the accumulated savings, they get a life annuity or make programmed withdrawals (inheriting any funds left over).
