Tony Bennett spoke about 9/11 and the Iraq war on Howard Stern's Sirius radio show

Legendary singer Tony Bennett said in an interview with Howard Stern on Monday night that 'we caused' the 9/11 attacks.

He also went on to say that  President George W. Bush confided in him that the war in Iraq was a mistake.

Speaking on Stern's Sirius Radio show, Mr Bennett, who describes himself as a pacifist, said: 'They flew the plane in, but we caused it.

'Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.'

Stern had asked the singer, a World War II vet, how the U.S. should deal with the terrorists responsible for the World Trade Centre attacks.

'But who are the terrorists?' Mr Bennett said, according to ABC News.

'Are we the terrorists or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don't make a right.'

The 85-year-old spoke of the night in 2005 when then-President Bush made that astonishing statement.

Mr Bennett said: 'He told me personally that night that, he said, 'I think I made a mistake".'

The event was in honour of Mr Bennett and he said he believed Mr Bush made the admission because he liked the singer.

Mr Bennett said that his experiences as a teenager in combat in the Second World War forever changed his position on war.

Haunting: Bennett said his views on war and 9/11 are shaped by his time in the U.S. Army during the Second World War

'I'm anti-war,' he said. 'It's the lowest form of human behaviour.'

He was drafted by the U.S. Army in November 1944 and served as an infantryman in Europe, moving across France, and later into Germany.

He said: 'The Germans were frightened. We were frightened. Nobody wanted to kill anybody when we were on the line, but the weapons were so strong that it overcame us and everybody else.

The day before his controversial remarks Bennett celebrated his 85th birthday gala in New York on Sunday, joined daughters Joanna, far left, Antonia, far right, and Susan Crow

Mr Bennett credited the Army with allowing him to study singing.
But he also admitted that his two years of service gave him enough time to witness the horrors of war.

He said: 'The first time I saw a dead German, that's when I became a pacifist.'

He told Mr Stern that he was left forever shaken by the sight of death.

Mr Bennett said: 'It was a nightmare that's permanent.

'I just said, "This is not life. This is not life".'

That's why, he added, that he agrees with Mr Bush.

He said: 'To start a war in Iraq was a tremendous, tremendous mistake internationally.'

The night before, Mr Bennett, who is currently promoting his new album, Duets II, enjoyed a star-studded party in his honour at his 85th Birthday Gala Benefit for Exploring the Arts at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Guests included Bill Clinton, Elton John and Robert DeNiro.

Notice the Soviet like spin on the article's title from the news article which calls a thoughtful expression "bizarre" when it is in fact a reflection of what every expert in the region has stated.

The guy is a WW2 vet, an accomplished artist (both song and paintings) and he is still going strong at 85 years and has a lifetime of accomplishments and behavior that has never been termed bizarre but say an opinion that contradicts the party line and suddenly he is 'bizarre'.

You poor American bastards living under a subtle totalitarian regime (which has more people in prisons than the old USSR did and red China) and you don't even know it.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

Of course he has the right to say anything he wants - that has absolutely nothing to do with military service - but this just makes him look like a kook.

I wouldn't have phrased it that way - "America caused 9/11" - but I've tried to get past the sound bytes and consider what is behind this train of thought.

You can easily dismiss it when it's a statist whacko like Michael Moore or a religious whacko like Louis Farrakhan saying it, but it's more difficult when it's someone like this. Bennett has seen the horrors of war up close and personal - I tend to give more weight to what people like that say.

Putting right or wrong motives aside for a moment - the truth is the US HAS interfered in other nations' political affairs. That is an indisputable fact. And, when a nation does that, it is not unreasonable to expect blow-back.

I AM NOT SAYING THE JIHADISTS WERE JUSTIFIED IN ATTACKING US ON 9/11. What I am saying is this: when nation #1 is perceived as meddling in nation #2's internal affairs, it is not surprising that perceived meddling will create resentment by lunatic factions in nation #2 and they will attempt to retaliate.

Ron Paul is accused of being a {{{shudder}}}} isolationist (he's not), but this is the point he tries to make and gets shouted down for it. We are not minding our own business here at home (or have we already solved problems like illegal immigration and a crappy economy?).

He's going to catch a lot of flak for what he said.

Mostly from people using relying on their initial kneejerk reaction, instead of their minds. BTW,this includes Tony Bennett to a certain extent.

He is right when it comes to the mythical country of "Arabia/Muslimandia" feeling under attack from America, and the attacks on 9-11 being counter attacks in THEIR minds. Face it,the typical Muslim ain't exactly the most informed and unbiased mind out there. Most of them get most of their VERY pro-Muslim/anti-Christian/Anti-west news from their religious cult leader in one form or another,so it is only natural for most of them to see an invasion of a Muslim country (Iraq and Afghanistan) as a attack on all of them.

And since a combined force of every military branch from every Muslim nation in the world on the US would last MAYBE 15 minutes against the US military,guerrilla/terrorist methods are the only methods available to them.

He is wrong when he starts mumbling the "but who are the terrorists?" nonsense. Not quite as wrong as the neo-Con RINO and neo-com Dims are with their insane policy of continuing to attack rifle carriers instead of the bankers and the clerics who keep pushing the ignorant brainwashed religious loons out the door and handing them rifles, but still wrong.

What HE isn't seeing is that the majority of American are as brainwashed as the ignorant Muslim peasants, and think the 9-11 attacks were unprovoked and THEY are now screaming for counter attacks.

He is also wrong with his kneejerk "give peace a chance" nonsense once the blood has started flowing. ALMOST as wrong as the politicians that want us to believe and who MAYBE believe themselves that the way to win a war is to kill tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of Privates, instead of taking out the leadership. The REAL leadership, not the field leadership. The politicians, clerics, and international financiers that issue the orders from the top and provide the political cover and the financing. Kill or nullify the efforts of these people in some other way and there will be no reason to kill hundreds of thousands of Privates.

Of course, none of the politicians or religious leaders want to do this because they fear the enemy will start targeting THEM instead of anonymous citizens and Privates.

This is a culture war and the only way to win it is to influence the culture of the enemy. You don't do this by killing goatherders. You do it by killing or intimidating the cultural leaders to the point where they quit pushing Jihad for profits and power.

While the methods being used now are good for the economy and good for politicians who represent areas who benefit from war industry jobs,it's not good for the country or the people who have to do the actual fighting.

Or for the cause of World Peace/Whirled Peas, either.

But I'd say he's earned the right to say it.

That he did.

He has to clarify his statement for the FOX right wing whacko nationalists. Left leaners are not the ones being offended by Bennett's comments - its the right wing kneejerk tea party types that are jumoing all over this.

It's the Dixie Chicks all over again - I guess the right wing whack job contingent (and this article is from a right wing leaning neocon rag in the UK) fears that these messages will filter down to their mind control right wing zombies and change their minds - and they can't let that happen.

he has a fuller explanation of what he meant on a web site

I found it here

A Statement from Tony Bennett (clarifying comments made on yesterday's Howard Stern program):

I am so grateful to be an American and as a World War II veteran, I was proud to fight to protect our values, which have made America the greatest country on the planet.

There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country.

My life experiences - ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching with Martin Luther King - made me a life-long humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior.

I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world.

If you go to the link and read some of the comments, you'll see why this topic is pretty much left un-discussed.

Too bad.

He has a RIGHT to do this as a citizen of our nation, no disputing it.

Not surprising, you confuse the broad term "government" with the narrower terms "statist"or "statism". We used to have - in this country - an example of a government THAT WAS NOT STATIST that still settled a continent, allowed a trans-continental railroad to be built, allowed for inventors like Bell, Edison, and the Wright Bros. to do their thing, and yes - even built the Panama Canal.

When a gov't is STATIST, however, it inevitably ends up with things like gulags, rounding up of dissidents, thought police, "re-education" camps and the like.

What's funny is this - the fact that you must think that somehow you are "special" to those who you flak for. You think you will somehow "escape" all the bad that will come from your statist utopia.

Here's a news flash - Lenin said of people like you that you were "useful idiots."

You and your brethren will be first in line . . . at the camps, that is.

The USA is not marching- but running- towards government corporatist Fascism, much like Italy under Mussolini. Corporatist fascism is kissing cousins with National Socialism, at a practical level.

Unfortunately, you espouse Socialism as the solution to all the evils of the world...

Your failure of logic is that the well- organized evils of the world, are organized BY governments. That is, your solution is more of what's causing the problems!

I fully recognize where we're at in this country, and where we're going... Some of us *have* escaped the mental prison built by propaganda- some of us by simply waking up, some of us by spending enough time outside Western media influences, to understand how much we've been lied to...

It would be a mistake on your part, to make such a sweeping generalization, because it's demonstrably incorrect.

He has to clarify his statement for the FOX right wing whacko nationalists.

FOX News - check
"right wing" - check
"whacko" - check

Can you write in anything other than stereotypes?

Here's a clue - I'm about as "right-wing" as you can get, but I have no use for the endless wars that statists like LBJ, Clinton, the Bushes and now Obama seem to be determined to get us in.

So wise up - if you're capable.

I don't see how anything in his past mitigates the fact he's expousing pure kook theory.

I don't see how you can make the "kook" argument.

It's an intellectually lazy response, to points made not only by him, but Ron Paul and even the CIA ("blowback," anyone?).

Your attempts to dismiss him in such a knee-jerk reaction, without supporting your statement, critically undermines your position.

Our vet Badeye who wears it on his sleeve and claiming Bennett's WW2 combat infantryman experience holds no weight is pure idiocy. I knew someone would call him on it and I'm glad CE did.

I don't see how you can make the "kook" argument.

It's an intellectually lazy response,

No, CE, its easy for the 'kook' part, because every theory suggested as to 'conspiracy' has been utterly debunked, many times.

As for the latter, after a decade of this, sorry, I just won't waste to much time, knowing 1)Kooks won't accept reality on this issue...2) Its wasted effort.

Believe what you want ot believe.
