Title: Netflix DVD mailing service to split off and become Qwikster

Netflix recently restructured its pricing model, splitting its DVD rental and Internet streaming services into separate plans. The controversial move, which effectively raised the monthly fee for Netflix subscribers who use both services, has not been well received by the company's customers.

The price hike was apparently just the first step of a more sweeping overhaul. In a blog entry that was published on Sunday night, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that the DVD rental service will be spun off into a separate unit, where it will operate independently under a new brand name: Qwikster.

According to Hastings, DVD mailing and Internet streaming require different approaches to business that are increasingly difficult for Netflix to reconcile. He believes that independence will make it easier to accommodate the unique requirements of each service. The split will ensure that DVD rentals are still available to consumers while the company focuses on moving forward its streaming business.

"We feel we need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolve, without having to maintain compatibility with our DVD by mail service," he wrote. "So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently."

In the blog post, he explained that the recent alterations to the pricing model were intended to be part of this broader change in Netflix service segmentation. He also expressed regret for the lack of communication surrounding the price changes and apologized for failing to articulate the scope of the transition up front.

"When Netflix is evolving rapidly, however, I need to be extra-communicative. This is the key thing I got wrong. In hindsight, I slid into arrogance based upon past success," he wrote. "But now I see that given the huge changes we have been recently making, I should have personally given a full justification to our members of why we are separating DVD and streaming, and charging for both. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do."

The rapid growth of the streaming service and its swift transition from value-add to core business obviously call for some restructuring at Netflix, but it's unclear if the company's new roadmap is the right way forward. Some of the technical changes that are going to occur as the company splits off the DVD mailing business don't look very appealing.

The Qwikster service will have its own independent website where users will have to go to manage their queues. After the transition, it will no longer be possible for users to manage their DVD and Instant queues through a unified interface. Although current Netflix subscriber data will reportedly be replicated over to Qwikster at launch, users will essentially have separate profiles at each website.

Hastings said that new customers will have to sign up and input their credit card information separately at Netflix and Qwikster. Movie ratings and reviews submitted by users will not propagate across both sites. When users search at Netflix for a movie that's not available for streaming, they won't be offered the DVD version. These baffling changes will erode much of the convenience and synergy that made Netflix appealing to the company's most loyal customers.

The one bit of silver lining in the bizarre Qwikster announcement is that the service will soon gain an upgrade option for video game rentals—a much-requested feature.

Although the move to split the services into separate businesses might make sense on some level, the decision to dismantle the long-standing integration between the services seems highly dubious. Consumers will have to tolerate a reduction in functionality on top of the unpopular price increase.

Amid these problems, Netflix continues to struggle with broadband caps and the challenges of negotiating content licenses. The company recently suffered a blow to its streaming content inventory because Starz decided not to renew its contract with Netflix.

Netflix predicts that it will lose approximately a million subscribers due to the changes—roughly four percent of the company's customer base. The lack of credible alternatives has worked in the company's favor.

Their stock price has been pummeled this past month.

I always thought they had a great business plan for movie viewers - then they got greedy IMO. I don't use them but I did give them serious consideration. I have friends who subscribe to them.

This new plan is so idiotic that it's almost like they hired Boofer as a consultant. They may as well just kill off the DVD side of the business. Unfortunately for them, they don't have much going on the streaming side either, unless all you want to watch is old tv shows.

I agree. The only reason I didn't use them is I don't even have enough time to view all the movies I already own.

I'm not so sure this isn't a "quiet surrender". The competition is getting tough out there, what with 1 dollar "rent a DVD" machines popping up all over.

Seems to me the real future of video rentals will be downloading/streaming them. I see a time in the VERY near future where even DVD's become as obsolete as 8-track tape players, and ALL movies are either downloaded or streamed.

Netflix made their bones on DVD rentals, and maybe wasn't ready to admit that is a dead end business and they are now focusing on web content rentals/purchases?

The problem Netflix is going to have with streaming (besides lack of content) is that the ISPs are starting to cap their bandwidth, and movies take a huge amount of it. Add in the bandwidth that DirecTv uses for it's On Demand service plus Amazon streaming and Hulu and there's big trouble brewing on the horizon for the users.

I'm terminating my $63 a month satellite TV in two weeks. Why should I pay for 23 percent commercial brainwashing every hour?

I receive about 22 free channels via my antenna - some of those PBS shows are pretty good.

I go out of my way to watch a single one-hour show a week - Breaking Bad - last night's episode was awesome. I think I can watch it on hulu.com at the local library for free.

Most current movies are of little to no interest to me. You can only cover up a total lack of writing, acting, and plot with CGI graphics and a really loud soundtrack for so long.

Netflix has a very deep DVD library, and to me that's it's main benefit. Redbox doesn't have it, and all the DVD rental stores near me have gone out of business.

It looks to be as though Netflix just gave a huge gift to Amazon.

Isn't basic hulu free? I know hulu plus where you get to watch on your tv isn't, but even at $8 a month it's not too bad. If they'd just dump the commercials I'd sign up again.

I agree. It must be my age or something but I love to watch 'old' movies that I've seen before numerous times.

I watched The Rifleman on Sunday morning on the free air waves after church.

Simple pleasures for my simple mind.

You don't like seeing the same commercials over and over and over? Sometimes even back to back. And Halloween commercials that started the day after Labor Day?

I wish for the good old days when advertising was needed to pay for television content, instead of TV becoming just another advertising medium, with a few minutes of 'drama' or 'comedy' in between.

I've been to Hulu several times in the past year and what few shows I watched were free - I'm talking about the computer and Internet version. They cut the commercials from 23 percent per hour to about 10 percent.

Do you observe which companies can afford to purchase commercials during prime time, such as ABC news for example?

Pharm, insurance, oil and all the others sticking it to us.

Showing old tv shows without commercials or those incredibly annoying promos for upcoming programs in the middle of the one you're trying to watch is Netflix's strength. Even PBS did it last night on Masterpiece for a new Ken Burns series.

The logo bugs at the bottom of the screen were bad enough, but this borders on making tv unwatchable.

I agree. Especially the Masterpiece Theater and Nova programs.

I go out of my way to watch a single one-hour show a week - Breaking Bad - last night's episode was awesome.

I'm a big fan of that show, too. Last night had me really hooked, and then the damn thing was over.

I also like stuff like Boardwalk Empire,Warehouse 13,Eureka,Fringe,etc,etc,etc. Not willing to give them up. Or future shows as good as The Shield or Deadwood.

I think I can watch it on hulu.com at the local library for free.

It wouldn't be the same for me. I sold my 4x4 van last summer and had some "free money" to spend,so I bought a new 58 inch flatscreen plasma tv. I have it hooked to some pretty good Pioneer speakers, and watching a show on a library computer just wouldn't be the same thing.

Especially since the library around here limits you to 1/2 hour at a time before you have to sign in again, and I ain't real crazy about the idea of buying blocks of time using my credit card or bank account on a library computer.

My library Internet computer time is free. I haven't been there in a few weeks but it's there if I need to use it.

I used to enjoy the heck out of The Shield. It's finished isn't it? I called it the Crooked Cops Show.

I would like to say Congratulations and Thank you to all the people who canceled their netflix subscription when they raised their prices! You have successfully got this company to listen to its customers. Now if more people would cancel with this crazy decision to split the company into 2 maybe they will get the message again and lower their prices back to where they were. I get the feeling they only raised the prices to put more money in their shareholders pockets anyway!.

It seems pretty accurate. Was boofer their consultant?
