Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he was “taken aback” by cheers at the CNN/Tea Party debate Monday at in response to the hypothetical death of a man who did not have health care insurance.

“I was a bit taken aback by that myself,” Perry told NBC News after appearing at a breakfast fundraiser in Tampa. “We’re the party of life. We ought to be coming up with ways to save lives.”

He said his stance on life did not apply to “issues of justice” and the death penalty.

“But the Republican party ought to be about life and protecting, particularly, innocent life,” Perry added.

During NBC’s Republican presidential debate in early September, the audience applauded Perry’s execution record. Under the governor, Texas executed 234 death row inmates.

“We’re the party of life. We ought to be coming up with ways to save lives.”

Funniest thing I've read today. He could be the next Reagan if he keeps it up.

Perry proves that the the GOP leaders really don't even understand their own ideology.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.
