Some wingnut on another board has this as his tagline:

"I will be voting for whoever [sic] wins the GOP PRIMARY. PERIOD."

Does he mean the FIRST primary, the last primary or the primary in his state? If whomever wins that primary doesn't win the nomination, will he be writing in a candidate?

Among all my kook anti groupies, he is the one with the most serious mental health issues in my opinion. Sometimes its extremely satisfying to note in passing, but then I see something like this via a non 'article' posted in the news column. Or more likely a cut and paste I usually ignore from one of you guys. Its just sad. An allegedly grown man begging another man he's never met to pay attention to him, every single day? By any means? Wow...

Greg was right about him before he died (magic to some of you). He's just a sick twisted fuck with no life off the internet, combined with raw envy. Its the only rational explanation after a decade of this type of behavior. And once again, he's pushing the patience of somebody that granted him posting rights in a political forum. Eventually, he'll wear out our hosts patience, and get banned permanently. As he has at FR (twice at least), LP, PBN/PLN, GBR, etc etc etc. Hell, they even banned him from a couple of other LP offshoots that exist solely for kooks (so it seems, anyway). This is why I've never bothered to ask any site owner to ban him. I know eventually they'll do so on their own. They always find themselves forced to, due to what appears to be an obvious personality disorder. My honest opinion here.

Stone has the personality disorder around here.

So does Boofer with that piece of crap above.

FWIW, Magic, whom I had kept in fairly steady contact with, sent me an email in the Spring before his death asking me to consider burying the hatchet with Boofer. I had no idea that the Colonel was ill. I got a very nice email from his family after he had passed and to this day I honor one of his legacies...

It's hilarious that Boofer harps on my internet posting...my businesses are doing very well...knock wood...he, on the other hand, is bitching that he, his wife and his "partner" are about to go tits up but he still manages time to post all day. Over the last year, we've developed 3 new products, recession proof - there's always a school year, weddings and anniversries - to go with the dozen or so we have that are somewhat seasonal. And I have two years left here on my 100% guaranteed contract...

To determine whether to use whoever or whomever, here is the rule:

him + he = whoever

him + him = whomever

Who is used as a subject and whom is used as an object.

"I will be voting for whoever [sic] wins the GOP PRIMARY. PERIOD."

Correct: I will be voting for whomever.... (object of the preposition for.)

"If whomever wins that primary doesn't win the nomination, will he be writing in a candidate?"

Correct: If whoever wins.... (subject).

This is the rule. Go to the grammar link and look it up:

To determine whether to use whoever or whomever, here is the rule:

him + he = whoever

him + him = whomever

Examples:

Give it to whoever/whomever asks for it first.

Give it to him. He asks for it first.

Therefore, Give it to whoever asks for it first.

http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar/whoever.asp

---

In the same sense:

I will be voting for whoever wins the GOP PRIMARY.

I will be voting for him. He wins the GOP Primary.

Therefore whoever is correct.

The reason for this is while it is an object of a preposition, it is also the subject of a dependent clause.

Another link you might can learn from:

http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/whomever-whoever.aspx

The trouble begins with the fact that “whoever did this” and “whomever I hire” aren’t just ordinary clauses; they’re noun clauses—clauses that act just like nouns. When you use these noun clauses as subjects or objects in larger sentences, the picture gets more complicated. Suppose the noun clause “whoever did this” is part of a sentence like “I want to speak to whoever did this.” Uh-oh, you may think, “whoever” is the object of “to,” and it should be “whomever”!

Noun Clauses with “Whoever” and “Whomever”

But you’d be wrong—“whoever” was the right choice when we were thinking about the clause “whoever did this” by itself, and it’s still the right choice now. But what about that “to,” in “I want to speak to whoever did this”? The answer is that the object of “to” is not “whoever.” It’s the entire clause “whoever did this.” Remember, this is a noun clause; they call it that because the whole thing acts like a noun, and in this case, the whole thing is the object of “to.”

Obama has played at being a president while enjoying the perks … golf, insanely expensive vacations at tax-payer expense. He has ignored the responsibilities of the job; no plans, no budgets, no alternatives … just finger pointing; making him a complete failure as a president

It's now "enquiring," it's "idiotic."

Note to self: Proofread before posting a feeble insult that will be made even more feeble by a typo...

PS: Avoid comma splices.

You've called for my banning several times, Boofer.

Can you make it through one day without telling a lie?

Who is used as a subject and whom is used as an object.

"I will be voting for whoever [sic] wins the GOP PRIMARY. PERIOD."

Correct: I will be voting for whomever.... (object of the preposition for.)

[no gnu taxes]

Therefore whoever is correct.

The reason for this is while it is an object of a preposition, it is also the subject of a dependent clause.

Oops! You are correct and I did get one bass ackwards.

"I will be voting for whoever [sic] wins the GOP PRIMARY.

[paraphrase] I will be voting for he who wins the GOP PRIMARY.

Whoever is correct.

The whole clause is the object. I believe it is a nominative (or noun) clause.
