History will never be able to tell us who made the fatal error in New York’s 9th district – Barack Obama, or Anthony Weiner. Just as Weiner kept on making critical errors every step of the way as his personal scandal unfolded earlier this year, President Obama has done everything in NY-09 to show that he is no friend of Israel and has no clue how to create jobs or learn from his many mistakes. I predict a tectonic shift among American Jews and within the Democratic Party if Obama doesn’t quietly retire. All the spinning in the world can’t spin away the trend of Scott Brown, the Tea Party victory of November 2010, and now the Turner earthquake. Many Democrats are awakening to the reality that their party has been hijacked by a radicalism completely unfamiliar to their parents’ and grandparents’ Democratic Party. An internal, partisan civil war is now brewing in that party. What I think tonight is less important than what Joe Lieberman, Bill Clinton, Evan Bayh, and the rest of the former, and now defunct, reasonable wing of the Democratic Party is thinking tonight.

Let me ask - are you a pro-football fan? If you are, chances are your favorite team has a rivalry. (a hundred years ago when the Buffalo Bills were actually good, they had a fierce rivalry with the Miami Dolphins. Now, given that both teams suck, it doesn't matter.) Watch what happens in a typical rivalry game. Tackles are tougher, the trash talk is meaner, the hits are harder. The "fans" are more rabid - even some fights break out in the stands. But what happens at the end? The players shake hands, pat each other's butts, and go off the field. Most importantly - the players cash their multi-million dollar checks. (They do play in the same league - the NFL - after all) USA politics circa 2011 is about as meaningful - and we "fans" are about as relevant.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure.
