Title: GOP Freshmen To Cantor: Forget Spending Cuts, Give Us Our Storm Aid

Majority Leader Eric Cantor is having a hard time finding support within his caucus for his no storm aid until there are budget cuts ultimatum.

House Republicans from flood-damaged areas are rejecting that position, saying that helping people whose lives have been upended by the storm should take precedent over managing the budget deficit.

The reaction is particularly noteworthy because it is coming from members of the House Republican freshman class, a group that swept into office last year on a platform of reducing the federal debt and the size of government.

The debate is a sensitive one for rank-and-file lawmakers, because it forces them to choose between the agenda of a party leader and the immediate needs of their districts.

Gee, it's almost as if they recognize they were elected to represent real people living in their districts, who face real disasters in which government help is necessary. Go figure. Of course, their awakening could have something to do with job number one for just about every member of Congress, being reelected.

Consider freshman Nan Hayworth, who made news last week saying she agreed with Cantor. Hayworth now: "'My priority in the coming weeks will be to see that the Hudson Valley has all the federal resources necessary to recover from Hurricane Irene,' she said. 'I simply won’t let politics get in the way of doing the right thing for our families and communities that have been affected by the disaster.'" So, in this case she won't let politics get in the way, but when it's not going to cause her a problem politically, sure, politics can get in the way of doing the right thing. I would think that they can do both.

The Freshmen already tried to cut he budget but the Hellbama and the Demoncrats got in the way.

This is a drop in the bucket.

As usual, they miss the point- due in large part (IMHO) to the moral relativism that has plagued this country for the last 100 years.

Simple answer? It's NOT the place of the federal government to give money to disaster-affected people, because it's not THEIR money to give.

There's an old parable about this, but the upshot is that this sort of "compassion" on the part of the federal government, is what got us to the bankrupt police-state that we now have.

They're gonna' have to suck it up, as best they can.

Cantor is right.

Hayworth: Keep politics out of FEMA disaster funding

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (R-Mt. Kisco) has been accused by critics of being part of a GOP effort to threaten not to fund FEMA at the level needed to help states and their residents recoup from Hurricane Irene unless Democrats agree to further cuts in the federal budget.

The freshman lawmaker Thursday said she “simply won’t let politics get in the way of doing the right thing for our families and communities that have been affected by the disaster.”

Hayworth was critical of those accusing her of playing politics.

“It’s irresponsible at best and harmful at worst to try to make this a political issue; it’s not,” she said. “We will find the priority funding for FEMA. That is not in question. The people in need should not worry about not getting that funding. They will have it.”

Hayworth said she expects that “we will find means within the federal budget to make room for that FEMA funding.”

I think the Paul Ryan plan was timid myself.

every Freshman Republican voted for it. Even Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin endorsed the Ryan plan.

The Ryan plan would add $6 trillion to the debt over 8 years and increase government spending from $3.7 trillion a year to $4.5 trillion a year over that same period of time.

Tell me again how the tea party/GOP want to cut spending and why I'm supposed to believe them?
