Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation

President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony on Wednesday – but nearly half of the 2010 playoff contenders won't be there.

NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers – Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart – will not be attending the White House visit due to "schedule conflicts."

They must be very busy people. Regardless of one's political views, the president is still the president – and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You'd think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon – if that's indeed the reason – could be rescheduled. After all, this is the President of the United States we're talking about here.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president's invitation simply seems strange.

Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth will attend.

Isn't this the sport founded by drug smugglers aka moonshine bootleggers?

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

Sounds like the writer sure likes the president. Sounds like he's envious he didn't get an invite.

I'll never understand why Americans, who always pretend they are anti-government, want a king so badly.

I don't know...... Tony Stewart is pretty famous although he seems to not be winning as much as in past years.

I'll never understand it, either. "Bush-bots" and "Obama drones" have more in common than they'd like to admit - one being they seem to check their critical thinking at the door when it comes to their favored ones.

As for me, I believe a true statesman comes along perhaps once every 75 - 100 years (if we're lucky).

The rest are political hacks and whores.

Him I know...He's dead?

The death of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. during the Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001 was a highly publicized event that generated intense interest from the media and resulted in various safety improvements in NASCAR auto racing.[1] Earnhardt was a seven-time series champion and one of NASCAR's most storied drivers.

Details of the crashA subsequent investigation revealed that Earnhardt's car struck the concrete retaining wall at a heading angle between 55 and 59 degrees, at an estimated speed of between 157 and 161 mph. Earnhardt was killed instantly.]

Following the accident, Earnhardt was cut from his car and taken directly to Halifax Medical Center by ambulance (Being dead, Earnhardt was not taken to the infield care center, which is usually mandatory). Earnhardt was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m EST, reportedly surrounded by his wife Teresa Earnhardt, his team owner/friend Richard Childress, and his son Dale Earnhardt Jr.

About 2 hours later, at a press conference, NASCAR President Mike Helton announced, "This is undoubtedly one of the toughest announcements I've ever personally had to make. But after the accident in Turn 4 at the end of the Daytona 500, we've lost Dale Earnhardt."

Not a wise move on NASCARs behave considering the struggle they are having just to hang on to their current fan base.

Our local Michigan Inter Speedway hasn't been sold out in years, in fact they have removed seats just in order to claim a sell out. That didn't work, either.

I suspect some minds may be changed by Wednesday.

Never swear "allegiance" to anything other than the 'right to change your mind'!

That looks more like the entrance to a company town.

If there are company towns, then there must be company stores:

Which reminds me of a song:

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
