Shortage of Vital Drugs Shows Another Free Market Failure in Health Care

By: Patrick Malone & Associates P.C. | DC Injury Lawyers

The U.S. faces a growing shortage of the low-profit but vital generic drugs that cancer patients and other desperate folks rely on. These drugs are made in places like India and China in plants that the Food and Drug Administration lacks power to inspect.

Meantime, Big Pharma focuses on new high-profit but low-benefit drugs. The latest examples of new FDA approvals: Provenge, a drug for prostate cancer which on average extends life by four months at a cost of $93,000, and Yervoy, a melanoma drug with a price tag of $120,000 for a similar average benefit of four more months of life.

As reported by Gardiner Harris in the New York Times, a lot of solutions are being proposed to the crisis that has been brewing for the last few years, ranging from creation of a government stockpile of drugs to a requirement that drug makers give an early warning to the FDA of inability to keep up with demand for drugs.

For some reason, this drug was heavily advertised in golf magazines, right up there with the Cialias/Viagra ads.

Says a lot about golfers, I guess.

Maybe that is a clue that this upper class is the real power in America? They want to skew the system to protecting their interests rather than that of the other classes. We keep hearing about NASCAR dads, etc but not the weekday golfer clique of upper middle class, country club belonging society.

I remember during the health care town halls a lot of the protestors were openly saying they did not want the new law to impact their medicare.

They were OK with socialism for themselves and not for the rest. That was implicit.

I buy that selfish reason for demonstration against so called obamacare more than I do demonstrations were motivated byt some nebulas fear of the increased role of govt. The detective principle of cui bono/who benefits is at play here more than defense of any ideology.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.
