(08-26) 11:13 PDT New York (AP) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations for residents in low-lying coastal areas ahead of Hurricane Irene. Bloomberg said at a briefing Friday that emergency shelters will be opened at 4 p.m. The low-lying areas are scattered across the city and are home to about 270,000 residents. They include parts of Battery Park City, Coney Island and the Rockaways. Bloomberg calls the mandatory evacuations a first. Officials also ordered an unprecedented shutdown of the city's mass transit system for Saturday in advance of the hurricane. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has never before halted its entire system in advance of a storm, though the system was seriously hobbled by an August 2007 rainstorm. The last planned shutdown of the entire transit system was during a 2005 strike.

It stops one block away from me. And the interesting thing is that when I looked at the map of areas in my borough that are under MANDATORY evacuation orders, it's where all the potential looters live anyway...
Wall St? 8D Too late to evac. The 1938 'cane hit Middle LI at 115 mph. At 100. Irene's going right over the Statue of Liberty. At High Tide. 12 ft surge. And the water has no where to go as the LI Sound will be pushing in from the East. All Manhattan tunnels will be flooded. And salt water will ruin all switches. 20 miles inland from SCarolina to the Canadian border will be w/o electricity. NYC for 6 days. Holland Tunnel will flood. Fill your bathtub. A gallon of water directly into the toilet bowl from, say 4 ft high, will flush it. I was out for ten days two winters ago. Get a car battery and 750 W power inverter. You can operate a power drill, computer, light....;}
I have over 100 gallons of water and 5 bags of charcoal...

No. I have 5 coolers filled with fresh water, several cases of bottled water and a dozen or so gallon milk cartons. I think we're going to be okay.

Good News....not unexpected....this could have been worse.... This is just like Katrina. The reporters are in 'safe' areas. The 'Silence' Areas is what you concentrate on. The most w/o power ever in the US.

I just talked to my Dad. He's been without power since noon or so today - the winds apparently were bad, like you wrote. He has a diesel home generator as part of his home construction and it's still running, but he doesn't know for how long or how long he'll be without power. My brother lives nearby and is without power too.
I still can't reach my family in Long Island, 39k of the 41k residents in their county are without power according to the LIPA (which reports 420k customers without power - which is somewhere around 1-2 million people). That's astounding given that i believe only about 3-4 million live in Suffolk. Flooding in the Catskills is said to be very bad as well. A “numb, in shock & devastated” Bach reports that his the house, once featured on MTV’s ‘Cribs,’ has been ‘destroyed, condemned and deemed uninhabitable,’ and that cherished mementos were lost in the onrush of reservoir water. “Somewhere under this river is a Kiss pinball machine and 2 gargoyles from the Dynasty tour,” he writes beneath the photo at left. “If you see them floating past your house, they’re mine. Or at least they were. :(” The house, at 99 Swimming River Road, is just a couple of hundred yards downstream from the reservoir spillway. A turbid rush of wash flowed over the spillway during Tropical Storm Irene Sunday morning, washing over the Swimming River Road bridge and prompting rescues of several residents downstream.
