Title: Did Fracking Cause the Virginia Earthquake?

Earthquakes in the nation's capitol are as rare as hen's teeth. The epicenter of Tuesday's quake was in Mineral, Virginia, which is located on three very quiet fault lines. The occurrence of yet another freak earthquake in an unusual location is leading many anti-fracking activists (including me -- they have just started fracking in Stratford, which is 40 minutes from New Plymouth) to wonder whether "fracking" in nearby West Virginia may be responsible.

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the process of initiating and subsequently propagating a fracture in a rock layer, employing the pressure of a fluid as the source of energy. The fracturing is done from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations, in order to increase the extraction rates and ultimate recovery of oil and natural gas and coal seam gas.

How Fracking Causes Earthquakes

According to geologists, it isn't the fracking itself that is linked to earthquakes, but the re-injection of waste salt water (as much as 3 million gallons per well) deep into rock beds.

Braxton County West Virginia (160 miles from Mineral) has experienced a rash of freak earthquakes (eight in 2010) since fracking operations started there several years ago. According to geologists fracking also caused an outbreak of thousands of minor earthquakes in Arkansas (as many as two dozen in a single day). It's also linked to freak earthquakes in Texas, western New York, Oklahoma and Blackpool, England (which had never recorded an earthquake before).

Industry scientists deny the link to earthquakes, arguing that energy companies have been fracking for nearly sixty years.

How much credibility do industry scientists have?

...and Blackpool, England (which had never recorded an earthquake before).

Sounds plausible that fracking may contribute to earthquake conditions.

Why would anybody's opinion who'd been chumped by Todd have any credibility? You thought it was plausible that he would pay you that money back too.

At least worth investigating.

How much credibility do industry scientists have?

The relevant question is whether their claim that fracking has been going on in the Uninted States for almost sixty years without consequential seismic activity is true or not.

A hell of a lot more than anti-fracking activists. At least the discredited global warming moonbats have found a new fracking hobby. Maybe it will keep them out of the flash mob scene.

The next relevant question might be, have there been any recent changes in how fracking is done?

The answer is there for those who read.

But the energy companies have 'experts' that say that's not a problem. Since you aren't an expert you need to accept their superior wisdom and knowledge, and forget any common sense that says flammable water is bad for you.

So you're suggesting that folks who disagree with your unsupported premise that fracking caused the WDC eathquake need to 'read up' on the subject?

Why don't you quote a couple of relevant paragraghs and supply a link?

I did supply a link.

Here's a revevant quote for you from Wikipedia:

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that "Earthquakes induced by human activity have been documented in a few locations" in the United States, Japan, and Canada; "the cause was injection of fluids into deep wells for waste disposal and secondary recovery of oil, and the use of reservoirs for water supplies."[34][35] Most of these earthquakes were minor, although an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 in 1967, near Denver, Colorado, "resulted from fluid injection at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal." Injection had been discontinued in the year prior to the earthquake "once the link between the fluid injection and the earlier series of earthquakes was established."
