Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has disavowed views put forward in his book Fed Up!: Our Fight to Save America from Washington just one week into his presidential campaign and only 9 months after it was first published in November 2010.

In the book, Perry blasted the expansion of the federal government and criticized programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He attacked social welfare programs as "fraudulent systems designed to take in a lot of money at the front and pay out none in the end."

Perry also called Social Security "a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal," which was implemented "at the expense of respect for the Constitution."

But his communications director, Ray Sullivan, recently told the Wall Street Journal that the book is not meant to reflect the governor’s current views on Social Security, describing the book as "a look back, not a path forward." He added that the book was "not in any way as a 2012 campaign blueprint or manifesto."

Perry now wants Social Security benefits for existing retirees and those close to retirement to be strongly protected, according to Sullivan, but the governor also seeks to reform the program to insure it is fiscally responsible. Subscribe to *Tea Party On Parade*

I wonder what conservatives on SS think when they read this? I mean conservatives skew old in demographics - so are they really arguing for a reduction or elimination of their SS?

It never made any sense to me. I have yet to meet a conservative who is on SS who hates SS. If they hate SS it is because they are not getting enough benefits....

Usually they want to end it for the next generation - because they want to preserve their current benefits.

In fact much of the anti-Obama care arguments was by old people upset they may see reductions/changes in their medicare. They wanted socialism for themselves but not for the younger generation that follows....

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

Since most Tea Baggers are on SS and Medicare, I wonder what they think, or is that an oxymoron?

Actually, I've never heard anyone on Medicare complain about it either.

You wouldn't. It's a freebie.

Talk to doctors and other health care professionals, though. Ask them how they like being reimbursed 50-70 percent for their services.

(Oh I forgot, they're EEEEVIL. Nevermind.)

So younger conservatives are begging us to end 'socialism' before they get old enough to enjoy it because once they enter the program they will love it to much to change it.....or something like that ?

Since Medicare is an evil government run program, Real Conservatives should refuse to accept it.
