Union Ain’t Wanted: The UAW’s Bad Week…

by LaborUnionReport

Over a year ago, the president of the United Auto Workers, Bob King, announced a campaign to ’shame’ foreign automakers with plants here in the U.S. into allowing his union to unionize them–the details of which would be released at a later point in time.

Earlier this year, when King finally released his new manifesto on what he expected the automakers to agree to, it was met with well-deserved derision.

The union was silent, though, when in June Bloomberg ran this headline: Hyundai Teaches UAW Best Factory Job Doesn’t Need a Union.

However, in early August, knowing that his union’s future is looking bleak, King stated that the union was in “confidential” talks with the foreign automakers.

“The vast majority of the assemblers here in the United States have at least agreed to confidential discussions,” UAW President Bob King said at an industry conference in Traverse City, Michigan. “We’ve had productive discussions. The last thing we want is confrontation.”

This seemed to confirm the buzz that was created in July when it was reported that the UAW was talking to the Volkswagen AG’s works council and the German union IG Metal to launch an attempt at unionizing the employees at VW’s new Tennessee plant.

Unfortunately for Bob King and his ambitions, the UAW got some bad news on Friday. It appears the German unions have decided against helping the UAW unionize the VW plant in Tennessee.

A key German labor leader says he won’t promote United Auto Workers’ efforts to organize Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant.

Bernd Osterloh, who represents labor on the German carmaker’s supervisory board, said he is keen on union representation for employees at the plant, but he would not actively promote UAW efforts to broaden its membership at VW, Reuters reported Thursday.

An auto analyst said Osterloh’s remarks “aren’t terribly surprising.”

“He’s trying to protect his own jobs,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Edmunds.com.

Krebs said German labor leaders are nervous about plant production in that country. At the same time, the United States has become much more competitive in manufacturing autos.

“Each one wants to protect their own,” she said.

This comes as a double-whammy following VW-owned Audi’s decision to locate a new manufacturing plant in Mexico instead of the U.S. in what appears to be a desire not to put itself in the UAW’s (and NLRB’s) sights.

To make matters worse for King and his cronies at the Solidarity House, just a few weeks after UAW members rejected a final offer at an American Axle plant in Cheektowaga, New York, the company has decided to close the plant, eliminating 300 jobs.

This closure follows the UAW’s rejection of a contract at American Axle’s Detroit facility two months ago, which prompted the company to announce the closure of the Detroit facility as well.

In June, [Chris Son, director of corporate and investor relations] told Crain’s that American Axle, a former General Motors Co. unit, continued to seek a competitive labor contract with the UAW that was much like a pact in place at the supplier’s Three Rivers plant in southwest Michigan.

Axle wanted to reduce compensation to $30 an hour from $45 at its Detroit plant, which is likely what the supplier was seeking in New York.

“It’s a matter of being market-competitive and achieving an appropriate cost structure,” Son said.

Between the UAW’s inability to save jobs in the North, its failures to unionize plants in the South, the chasing of Audi to Mexico, and the rejection by the German union, there is a bright side for Bob King: At least none of his members were caught by news cameras smoking pot this week.

Of course, there’s always next week.

Union Middle Class Ain’t Wanted...

The middle class just doesn't "get" that the decline in the middle class and the disparity between "have's" and "have not's" directly correlates to the decline of unions.

But it is hilarious that they "listen" to the "have's" when they blame the unions for the woes they suffer...

Then why don't the workers want them if that's the case?????

I don't see anybody clamoring for their workplaces to be unionized..... Or maybe it's because they don't see what the unions have been professing for years and years.... BROTHERHOOD!!!!! All they see is the destruction of the workplace not the betterment of it.....

No, it just doesn't make sense....

Look at the decline of the union worker in this nation.

Look at the widening income gap.

They correlate.

It costs $33K to house a prisoner. The US spends $9.6K, on average, to educate a student.

Right to work states have seen their better paying jobs flee as well.

I don't expect you to "get" that.

Capitalists have long been best served by a fearful and ignorant work force. It's why they murdered union leaders and workers both when they had the fucking nerve to try to negotiate the price of their labor.

You willingly nail your own coffin. And that of others. The middle class in this nation has been led, often willingly, in to blaming themselves for their own decline.

Being as the union worker membership only makes up about 10% of the workforce, I don't see their influence as being relevant.... and their membership is shrinking on a daily basis due to the wants of the "workers and the union bosses".....

Now if you want someone to blame for the lack of wages in the jobs we have nowadays then you have to look no farther that your local politician and union boss.... They are the ones who are making it easier to outsource the better paying jobs and leaving only the traditionally lower paying (minimum wage) "SERVICE" type jobs.....

And if you really want to get mad about something get mad about the value of the dollar, it aint shit!!!!! thank your local politician and the Fed for that...

The lunatic left just doesn't understand. That's the problem.

They just don't get that they are pricing themselves into extinction.... They don't get that that's the reason why Union employment/membership is going down the toilet..... and their jobs going overseas to some idiot who can't even speak English.... I hope that is what they really wanted because that is what they got!!!!!!!

I'm all for a fair wage don't get me wrong, what I'm not for is teachers making $80K+ to teach our children useless shit... or refuse collectors making $100K+ to do something that people on Welfare could do for a whole lot less if working to get a check was mandatory.... making $60K+ to phucking mow grass in the highways median strips... what a joke......

I can see having unions for some of the skilled trades because that's how a lot of the trades employees get fully trained... BUT.... most of the unions represent "UNSKILLED" employees, not people with college degrees!!!!!! And those people with degrees realize that being a member of a union would be stupid and self defeating.... Especially when they can negotiate a better package with their emplyers because of "WHAT THEY KNOW" not WHO REPRESENTS THEM"....What employer in his right mind (other than the government) would want to pay some uneducated doofuss a boatload of money to do menial work....... "NONE"... that's why unions are becoming dinosaurs, extinct......

About the only thing "MOST" of the unions are good for is be a money laundering device for the Dumbassocrats to unwillingly extract campaign contributions from the taxpayers... and to supply a class of total dumbasses to vote for them..... Now if "THAT" is being relevant then there is something very wrong with this country......

And the other thing they don't realize is the dollar is worth about 1,000th of what is was worth about 125 years ago... If the dollar was worth something even minimum wage jobs would be half way decent, but that aint the case.....

When asked by a Liberal what I bought my Granddaughter for her 1st birthday I replied, "MORE AMMUNITION"!!!! -----------------------------"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

They just don't get that they are pricing themselves into extinction.

This is the truest statement I've read in a long time.

But it's not just the unions. The auto company executives are brain dead idiots as well. I've blogged about this before.

Fortunately, Ford brought in a CEO from outside the industry (Allan Mulally) who gets it as well. This guy came from the outside to rescue Ford like Louis Gerstner came from the outside to rescue IBM.

Unlike Chrysler and GM, Ford did not get government subsidies. Now Ford has to compete against government subsidies. It shouldn't be too hard.

Bull.

That's the Bill of Goods that you've been sold on union membership. First off, union membership is declining because US business shipped their jobs overseas. Secondly, US businesses did a great job of "Selling" unions as their "reason" for doing so.

Unions killed nothing in this nation but built just about EVERYTHING and US business profitetd handsomely on the backs of union labor.

Again, look at the decline of the middle class in this nation and lok at the decline in union membership.

They go hand in hand.
