In 2009, Georgia Southern University's Department of Sociology and Anthropology began a project to investigate the archeology at Camp Lawton, a Civil War prisoner of war camp situated in Jenkins County, Georgia. Working with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, archeologists used the drawings of Private Robert Knox Sneden, a prisoner at the camp, to designate several initial survey areas and to identify the likely location of the camp stockade. About that same time, we learned that Dr. John Derden of East Georgia College was completing a history of Camp Lawton. His knowledge and expertise provided valuable guidance to the archeological project.

In December 2009, the LAMAR Institute (a private archeological research group) did ground penetrating radar (GPR) in an area where we believed the stockade walls crossed. GPR allows archeologists to "see" beneath the ground surface using sound waves, allowing us to dig more efficiently. GPR showed a distinct disturbance in this area and this is where we dug our first test trenches. Work has continued in this area in an effort to gather enough information to reconstruct a partial replica of the stockade wall.

Work in one of the survey areas began in January 2010. We began by digging inside the stockade enclosure north of Magnolia Springs Creek to determine if anything remained of the place where prisoners lived and worked. We did not expect to find much. The archeological team assumed that over the years most of the artifacts had been removed, much like at Andersonville Prison. If the artifacts had not been taken, then it was assumed that surely years of cultivation and landscaping would have destroyed almost all evidence of the occupation! Much to our surprise - and delight - this was not the case.

The archeology has slowly begun to yield critical new information about life in this Civil War prison. It adds a new dimension to the history of Camp Lawton and, more importantly, provides insight into the experiences of prisoners who were held there — those who survived and those who did not. Even though the camp was occupied for only six weeks, we have found a complex story of loss and hardship along with survival and ingenuity, a story that is vital to our understanding of the experiences of Civil War soldiers, both Union and Confederate, during the tumultuous March to the Sea.

Yeah, a "little thing" called the "Civil WAR" or "the WAR between the States" or "the WAR against northern aggression" or ....

Do any AMERICANS remember it?

The war of Northern Aggression was a definite turn for the worse in government. Adherence to the Constitution and rule of law haven't returned since.

The Marxist tyrant Lincoln dealt the United States a fatal blow, as history has proven. His brains were blown out too late to reverse the downward path of the USA, but does serve as a warning to present and future presidents what can happen when you push we the people too far.

Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Nixon, Jimmiah Carter, the Bush team, and hObama, continue in the footsteps of Lincoln. That list is not complete, but it's the worst of them, IMO.

The Marxist tyrant Lincoln....

Lincoln's view that the Union created the States, and the States were nothing more than large counties has an interest concurrence, plus the dissent of Ronald Reagan. This effectively stood the government of the Framers on its head.

During the war, the U.S. Supreme Court was packed with ten (10) members, five (5) of whom were appointed by Lincoln. The Court went through contortions to not find various government acts to be unconstitutional. Much of the legal precedent cited by the GW Bush administration came from the Civil War era court. Bad precedent, even for a purported good cause, is just bad.

A current example might be the Health Care mandate. Supporters claim the failure to purchase is an act affecting interstate commerce, empowering compulsory purchase under the power to regulate interstate commerce. Arguably they contort the law for a good cause, health care. However one considers the cause, the precent would be horrible. If the failure to buy a commercial product is an illegal act, the expansion from health care to other products would appear limitless. It is beyond the Framers' wildest dreams.

During the war, an unconstitutional, unapportioned income tax was implemented, and the Internal Revenue Bureau created to enforce collection. The first national police force was also formed.

Effectively, the form of government was revolutionized from Federal to National. Early arrivals to the Philadelphia convention used the term national in an early draft. When the rest of the delegates arrived, the term national was stricken. It was considered, rejected, and removed. A federal government was adopted.

The Hamiltonians of the Revolutionary era, and radical republicans of the civil war era favored a national system. Quotes from Lincoln regarding the relationship between the Federal (or national) government and the State governments illuminate the issue:

By: Lincoln's message of July 4, 1861 to the Special Session of Congress.

What is the particular sacredness of a State? I speak not of that position which is given to a State in and by the Constitution of the United States, for that all of us agree to---we abide by; but that position assumed, that a State can carry with it out of the Union that which it holds in sacredness by virtue of its connection with the Union. I am speaking of that assumed right of a State, as a primary principle, that the Constitution should rule all that is less than itself, and ruin all that is bigger than itself. But, I ask, wherein does consist that right? If a State, in one instance, and a county in another, should be equal in extent of territory, and equal in the number of people, wherein is that State any better than the county?

Lincoln's message of July 4, 1861 to the Special Session of Congress.

The States have their status IN the Union, and they have no other legal status. If they break from this, they can only do so against law, and by revolution. The Union, and not themselves separately, procured their independence, and their liberty. By conquest, or purchase, the Union gave each of them, whatever of independence, and liberty, it has. The Union is older than any of the States; and, in fact, it created them as States.

For a concurring opinion:

What is a confederation of states? By a confederacy, we mean a group of sovereign states which come together of their own free will and, in virtue of their sovereignty, create a collective entity. In doing so, they assign selective sovereign rights to the national body that will allow it to safeguard the existence of the joint union.

This theoretical definition does not apply in practice, at least not without some alterations, to any existing confederation of states in the world today. It applies the least to the American Union of States. Most of these individual states never possessed any sovereignty whatsoever. They were gradually brought into the framework of the union as a whole. Therefore. the various states of the American Union constitute, in most instances smaller or larger territories that were formed for technical administrative reasons and their borders were frequently drawn with a roler. These states never possessed any previous sovereignty of their own because that would have been impossible. These states did not come together to create the Union, but it was the Union that created these so-called states. The extensive rights of independence that were relinquished, or rather rights that were granted, to the different territories are in harmony with the whole character of this confederation of states and with the vastness of its area and overall size which is almost as large as a continent. So, in referring to the states of the American Union, one cannot speak of their state sovereignty, but only of their constitutionally guaranteed rights, which we could more accurately designate as privileges.

For a dissenting opinion:

Ronald Reagan, First Inaugural Address, Tuesday, January 20, 1981

All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government.
