Title: Americans' views of Congress reach historic lows

As bad a stretch as President Obama has had of late -- and there's no denying it's been bad -- the recent debt-ceiling hike has managed to draw an already unpopular Congress to new depths, according to a series of new polls.

Consider these findings:

•A CNN/Opinion Research poll shows just 14% of voters approve of Congress's job performance, while 84% disapprove -- both records.
•A CBS/New York Times poll has similar numbers -- 14% approve and 82% disapprove of Congress' job performance, the latter an all-time high.
•A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll puts Congress' approval even lower -- 10%. That's a drop from 20% in late June.
•Just 18% of registered voters in a Washington Post survey said they were inclined to vote to re-elect their representative in Congress -- the lowest number in more than two decades (only once before had it ever dipped below 30%).

Congress has rarely polled very well. But as Arizona Sen. John McCain joked during the 2008 primaries, polling this low means we're down to just close relatives and paid staff in the approval camp.

What that cheap charlatan left out, were their god damned lobbyists.

Do you think this is because of the tea party? Or because most of congress isn't "tea party" enough?

Tea party, who's approval rating is down to 18%

Democrats have moved ahead on the generic ballot and are now in a position to retake the House next year. The insanity of the tea party is doing for the national Republicans what it did for state Republicans in Colorado. Nevada, and Delaware.

So you like the status quo and large deficits. You must be on our stolen gravy train.

No, I don't like the status quo, but I don't see pushing the country into a depression as a wise move right now. And if the tea party were truly concerned about deficits, it should have taken the $4 trillion deal on the table which would have avoided a debt downgrade. Instead, it's unwillingness to consider tax hikes (something Reagan even supported), and it's open talk that "default wouldn't be so bad" led to the recent downgrade which will cost people far more than tax hikes ever would have.

So you think 50 percent tax rate on some people is ok?

what were tax rates on the top wage earners in the 1950's when the economy was booming and the middle class was growing?

Look, if you want to defeat Obama, you should learn the lesson of Nevada, Colorado, and Delaware and not nominate a right-wing nut job who has fanatical support from 10% of the voting public.

Tax rates aren't the only factor.

The government can't make the economy good or bad. It is up to indivuduals to do that. They can have an effect. But it is the people.

Really, so you think all those blaming high unemployment on Obama are wrong?

I tried to clarify in the part of my quote you left off for some obvious reason.

What I am saying is the government can't automatically make it good. It takes individuals working hard and doing the right thing. The government can make it worse by taking to much money out of hands of the people who earned it. I should have worded it better and been more clear.

Obama deserves a great deal of blame for the economy. But it isn't his fault entirely for sure.

Fair enough. But you ignore the fact that government can hurt the economy a great deal by rapidly cutting spending.
