Title: Americans' views of Congress reach historic lows

As bad a stretch as President Obama has had of late -- and there's no denying it's been bad -- the recent debt-ceiling hike has managed to draw an already unpopular Congress to new depths, according to a series of new polls.

Consider these findings:

•A CNN/Opinion Research poll shows just 14% of voters approve of Congress's job performance, while 84% disapprove -- both records.
•A CBS/New York Times poll has similar numbers -- 14% approve and 82% disapprove of Congress' job performance, the latter an all-time high.
•A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll puts Congress' approval even lower -- 10%. That's a drop from 20% in late June.
•Just 18% of registered voters in a Washington Post survey said they were inclined to vote to re-elect their representative in Congress -- the lowest number in more than two decades (only once before had it ever dipped below 30%).

Congress has rarely polled very well. But as Arizona Sen. John McCain joked during the 2008 primaries, polling this low means we're down to just close relatives and paid staff in the approval camp.

What that cheap charlatan left out, were their god damned lobbyists.

No, I don't like the status quo, but I don't see pushing the country into a depression as a wise move right now. And if the tea party were truly concerned about deficits, it should have taken the $4 trillion deal on the table which would have avoided a debt downgrade. Instead, it's unwillingness to consider tax hikes (something Reagan even supported), and it's open talk that "default wouldn't be so bad" led to the recent downgrade which will cost people far more than tax hikes ever would have.

Tax rates aren't the only factor.

The government can't make the economy good or bad. It is up to indivuduals to do that. They can have an effect. But it is the people.

My preference is for replacing income-based taxes with a national sales tax.

Bachmann's preference is for sending the economy into a depression by immediately cutting federal spending by 40%.

If you think she'll win on that platform, well good luck.

I tried to clarify in the part of my quote you left off for some obvious reason.

What I am saying is the government can't automatically make it good. It takes individuals working hard and doing the right thing. The government can make it worse by taking to much money out of hands of the people who earned it. I should have worded it better and been more clear.

Obama deserves a great deal of blame for the economy. But it isn't his fault entirely for sure.

it has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. One of the main reasons why Angle lost is that she exposed her utter idiocy when she publicly opposed Harry Reid's efforts to lobby for low cost loans to support the City Center project in Las Vegas that will create approximately 22,000 jobs.

The CEO of MGM Grand (a Republican who swung his support to Reid) noted:

“Murren said Tuesday that Angle's comment that the company's CityCenter development injured other businesses in Nevada was disappointing and perplexing. He questions how a U.S. Senate candidate could have such a "poor" understanding of business and economics.”

Bachmann aims to do on a national scale what Angle tried in Nevada - bring her absolute idiocy to a point where it can kill not just tends of thousands, but hundreds of thousands of jobs.

A flat tax would be a good idea. I agree with you if that is what you are talking about.

If the federal spending is cut 40 percent. There should be tax reductions of about half of that to put more money back into the economy.

If people get to keep more money it is better then sending it to buerocrats in Washington DC who take a cut then send it back out. I want those people out of the jobs they are in and out working for a living.

It is a violation of natural law to take from one group of people and give to another.

You need to do the math.

If government spending is cut by 40% and revenues remain flat, the budget will be balanced. Cutting taxes further means more reductions in revenue, meaning more cuts in spending to achieve balance.

But that's a false calculation - cutting spending by 40% will dramatically slow the economy, likely to the point of a depression, which means a drop in tax revenues, thus putting you into a downward spiral.

As I've noted numerous times, look at the impact of austerity in places like the UK and Ireland. The economies slowed as a result of spending cuts, shrinking tax revenues, and leaving budget deficits the same as before austerity was implemented.

Nope. The policies of Bush and the GOP led us to this by running up deficits in the early 2000's, drastically increasing spending during an expansion, and doubling our defense budget while wasting more than a trillion dollars in needless overseas adventures. And of course there's the decision by the Republicans and Allen Greenspan to let an unfettered CDS market develop without any oversight.

I don't think the "TEA" party has anything to do with it. This is a decades old phenomena but the article describes an interesting "low." is all. If I can find a suitable graphic to post about the phenomena I shall ping you.

I think the American People are discouraged anymore about those that are elected; everyone hears the sage argument, it is better to elect a seasoned politician (an incumbent) than a freshman. So, the publick discontent was actually before the "TEA" party AND the discontent with the established status quo has produced many new congressional members thus the old sage position is not valid in these political times.

The phenomena is actually good for America. We need a breath of fresh aire eliminating the political posturing that has everyone in trouble.

So you think 50 percent tax rate on some people is ok?

I do. The earlier US government standards for the absurdly wealthy (some CEOs make hundreds of million a year in salary, bonuses and other perks such as stock options and preferred benefits); this imbalance of wealth while the America middle class is being PUSHED into poverty is destroying America.

Simultaneously, those same corporations that receive BILLIONS in corporate welfare and do not owe a dime in taxes should be removed from any future direct subsidies.

So, my perspective is that methods of solution take on various options and plans; but it can't be performed in any meaningful way until America reduces its budgets on all government levels.
