Texas Gov. Rick Perry got the national attention but Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Rep. Ron Paul got more votes today at the Iowa straw poll.

Paul finished a close second at the quadrennial fundraiser in Ames. The Lake Jackson congressman received 4,671 votes.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, an Iowa native, finished first with 4,823. Perry received 718 write-in votes, placing him sixth, just ahead of fellow no-show Mitt Romney.

The straw poll, which was overshadowed by Perry's competing event in South Carolina, traditionally serves as a test of campaign organizations and a winnower of presidential also-rans. Remember would-be presidents Orrin Hatch, Dan Quayle, Elizabeth Dole and Tommy Thompson? Their White House runs ended soon after this same straw poll.

Among the candidates on the razor's edge after the straw poll were Rep. Tim Pawlenty, whose campaign was well-organized but finished far back in third place, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, whose struggling candidacy garnered just 69 votes, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose campaign did not have enough cash on hand to rent a tent in Ames.

Perry didn't participate in the Iowa event, but an independent group of Perry supporters (Americans for Rick Perry) stumped the state for a week in search of write-in votes in Ames.

In the end, the straw poll ended up a test of enthusiasm, and the candidates with the most enthusiastic support were Paul and Bachmann. Another important note: The top finishers all were signers of a pledge to outlaw abortion and the three non-signers (Romney, Cain and Huntsman) finished at the back of the pack.

“It is no surprise that the top four vote getters of the Iowa Straw Poll are also signers of our Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Pro-life politics have long played a crucial role in Republican primaries and this election cycle will be no different."

Perry, as a new candidate, has not yet signed the pledge. But there was considerable griping about the absentee candidate in Ames.

"Today was a bad choice of days" for the Texan to declare his intentions, Rep. Steve King, a prominent conservative leader in Iowa, told NBC's Chuck Todd.

"He has to work harder," said King, "and it'll be harder for him to get traction because of the timing today."

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, invited Perry to seek the votes of Hawkeye State voters.

"The more, the merrier," he said.

Here are the final returns:

Bachmann, 4823

Paul, 4671

Pawlenty, 2293

Santorum, 1657

Cain, 1456

Perry, 718

Romney, 567

Gingrich, 385

Huntsman, 69

The actual message from Iowa was: Tim who?

Bachmann and Paul were 152 votes apart. Each of them got more than twice as many votes as Pawlenty. Pawlenty spent more money in Iowa than Bachmann and Paul combined.

Pawlenty doesn't have any hair on his cajones and the voters know it. He's a wimpy little twit who couldn't even begin to survive the bare knuckle brawlers running the Obama campaign. Pawlenty is toast.

Perry wasn't even a candidate and wasn't even listed on the ballot, yet he got more votes than Romney.

The nomination is going to come down to Romney versus Perry. In the end Paul will still be standing, but he won't get the nomination.

Bachmann is not going to be anyone's VP selection, but Nicky Haley could be.

Just watch.

That is about right. The White House fears a Romney nomination much more than Perry so I guess I'll have to shill for Perry for awhile.

Still hope the crazies in YOUR party stay on the front burner at least through the primary season. They say the damnest things that are so much fun to exploit.

;)

I've been thinking that Bachmann may be running for VP, so why do you think that won't happen?

She is too independent to be anyone's VP.

I really like Bachmann. I would vote for her if she won the GOP nomination.

Neither Perry or Romney would select her.

South Carolina Governor Nicky Haley has a chance to be VP as does Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal. They are both great people but are also team players.

Bachmann, Paul, and Christy are NOT team players. They want to lead. So, they will not be selected.

I like Bachmann, too. I was somewhat jolted with THIS ANSWER SHE GAVE at the debate the other night, however.

I'll be charitable and chalk it up to the heebie-jeebies. I HOPE she knows better . . .

Neither Perry or Romney would select her.
At this point you can say that. But at this point in '79, who would have thought the 1980 ticket would be Reagan/Bush. (They appeared to be mortal enemies at that stage.)

Politics makes strange bedfellows.

South Carolina Governor Nicky Haley has a chance to be VP as does Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal. They are both great people but are also team players.
I don't know much about Nicki Haley (except she would bring great SEX appeal to the ticket.) Jindal seemed to handle himself well during the oil spill.

No offense to anyone meant, but to me Bachmann comes off as stupid as Palin.

They both rarely have anything of substance to say, just endless platitudes and fluff.

And when they do have something of substance to say, they're wrong.

The media certainly have portrayed them as stupid. I don't believe either of them are.

In Palin's case, she's somewhat a victim of the McClown campaign which - if you think about it - is a double-edged sword. If it hadn't been for McClown, we'd have never even heard of Palin. But, due to their micro-managing her interviews (plus, why the HELL would any conservative even go on with Katie Couric or the jackass with the glasses who's name escapes me), she DID come off as - shall we say - unprepared.

Palin will never be a GOP candidate for POTUS, but she's done okay. So - I don't happen to think she's stupid

In the case of Bachmann, if she IS stupid (as declared by the media) she's in good company. Anyone - in the eyes of the media - who doesn't toe the statist line - is stupid. Reagan was stupid.

I was taken aback by her answer the other evening as to Obama care being even against State constitutions. I hope she just wasn't clear in her answer, and is not as ignorant of state's rights as that answer shows.

They are both admitted treasonous Zionists, so should be hung at next light along with one fifth of congress.

Could you do me the favor of giving your definition of Zionist?

However, I wouldn't be opposed to reducing our Foreign aid substantially.

so should be hung at next light along with one fifth of congress.
Now THERE'S a thought! I like it! (I'm sure we probably disagree with exactly which fifth should be hung, tho. Too bad.)

The one fifth that's in Israel partaking of their 'hospitality' this summer should make a good start.
