The Obama administration is expressing concern about what it says is a tide of anti-Americanism in Egypt. The State Department says criticism of U.S. aid and motives as the country transitions to democracy are inaccurate and unfair.
The State Department has raised the matter with Egyptian officials. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland called personal attacks on the U.S. ambassador to Egypt "unacceptable."
Nuland says Washington firmly supports Egypt's democratic transition and will continue to. The administration has been surprised by a rise in anti-American sentiment in the Mideast.
Some in Egypt have accused the United States of interference and fanning instability since the ouster of longtime U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak earlier this year.
