China's first aircraft carrier held its first sea trial Wednesday morning, in a step likely to stoke patriotic pride at home and jitters abroad about Beijing's naval ambitions.

The long-awaited debut of the carrier, refitted from a former Soviet craft, marks only an initial step toward China's plans to build a carrier force that can project influence into the region, where seas are spanned by busy shipping lanes and thorny territorial disputes.

The carrier "left its shipyard in Dalian Port in northeast Liaoning province Wednesday morning to start its first sea trial," said Xinhua, describing the trip as only a tentative trial run for the unfinished ship.

"Military sources said that the first sea trial was in line with the schedule of the carrier refitting project and would not take a long time," said the report.

"After returning from the sea trial, the aircraft carrier will continue refit and test work," said the report.

Last month, China's defense ministry China confirmed the government was refitting the old Soviet vessel, and sources told Reuters it was also building two of its own carriers.

The carrier plan is just one part of China's naval modernization program, which has forged ahead while other powers tighten their military budgets to cope with debt woes.

That growing Chinese naval reach is triggering regional jitters that have fed into longstanding territorial disputes, and could speed up military expansion across Asia.

In the past year, China has had run-ins at sea with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. The incidents -- boat crashes and charges of territorial incursions -- have been minor, but the diplomatic reaction often heated.

Ha..Let's see if it holds up any better than their bullet train.

You have a point about quality and reliability concerning China's own products and particularly their own infrastructure. But, an aircraft carrier is an entirely different "class" of product, altogether.

In this case, it is the Soviet carrier Varyag that has been undergoing about a decade of rebuilding; it was originally built in 1985.

On June 8, 2011, the Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, Gen. Chen Bingde confirmed that Beijing is building an aircraft carrier, marking the first acknowledgement of the ship's existence from China's armed forces. He said that the refurbished Soviet carrier "is being built, but has not been completed". The ship would be used for training and as a model for a future indigenously-built ship and is expected to be launched by the end of June at the earliest. Qi Jianguo, assistant to the chief of the PLA's general staff said "All of the great nations in the world own aircraft carriers -- they are symbols of a great power"[8] On July 27, 2011, the Chinese Defense Ministry, officially announced it was refitting the vessel for "scientific research, experiment and training."

Essentially, the craft is is being used as a baseline method of study for the design and manufacture of later carriers.

Independent experts are convinced that far from just having one, renovated vessel, China’s defense ministry has also launched a program to build one to two brand-new, indigenous aircraft carriers.

“I consider it plausible that by the late 2020s, China could have up to six carriers, three non-nuclear for regional missions and three nuclear-powered carriers that will be advancing China’s interests well beyond the Asian region,” said Fisher.

What we are witnessing, right before our eyes, is the rise of China as a global military power as American global military power is in retreat.

Ha. Those crafty Russians are also selling older submarines to the Vietnamese. That Vladimir is a good salesman...

Good - let the Chinese play world policeman for awhile. I'm sure all the statists over here will be happy - certainly, the Chinese will do a MUCH better job.

Those crafty Russians are also selling older submarines to the Vietnamese.

In this case, although Russia originally built the craft, it was sold in 2000 by the Ukrainians. It took almost 2 years to tow the craft from the Black Sea, through the Mediterranean Sea around the Cape of Good Hope and on to China.

Believe it or not, the original intent of the vessel in China was to be a gambling casino in Macau; but was later adopted by the Chinese People for research purposes.

Like the US has performed for some 65+ years running around the world and interfering in other sovereign nations affairs? Acting as America has? Why else have an aircraft carrier? Or a fleet of carriers as China plans? It is for long distance assault: the Varyag can carry 26 fixed wing aircraft and 24 helicopters.

Western Civilization is overrated, anyway.

By whom? You?
