God hears GOP prayers for rain and answers them with a big NO

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

He's punishing Texans for electing Perry, not to mention Bush and LBJ.

The same atmospheric conditions that are brining drought to Texas are keeping California's weather mild this summer. I doubt those who are quick to attribute disasters to god's judgment on a people for tolerating gays and abortion will claim that god is now blessing California with good weather.

I am just reporting on reality. Prayers for rain happened. No rain followed. Hence God answered with a resounding NO to the GOP's organized begging er praying.

You'll have to ask Goody.

He had God in a pretty tight little box the other evening - adamantly declaring what God DOES and DOESN'T do. In fact, Goody assured me with 100 percent certainty that I was going to Hell

In fact, YOU had better check with Goody and find out what YOUR final destination is . . .

It seems to me God answers prayers for personal guidance the best.

I do remember my Texas born and raised MIL organizing a 'pray for rain' group in San Antonio a few years back during another one of Texas's 'normal' droughts. They had their prayers answered with flooding, and two of her best friends lost their homes.

She died recently and to her grave, she vehemently hated Perry and the Bush's.

The point is that prayers organized by Perry to God to fix the screwed up state of Texas mean nothing to the Lord.

God does not listen to Protestant prayers. They are the mouthings of cursed heretics.

All Protestants are bound for hell.

Sure. I belong to the actual Church he founded. I am not a Protestant so I am closer to him than you.

So....God is a "genocidal tyrant"? It's your opinion that he's 'Hitler-the-Creator'...

And here YOU thought we should live forever on earth, eh? Go ahead and defy Him and live as loooong as YOU want. What's that? You can't? The chutzpah of The Almighty!! Who does He think He is making himself an omnificent GOD?!??

MEMO: YOU don't make the rules. You are mere dust in the wind. But you do have Free Will.

IF some of us are patient, we may "live forever" - only it won't be on this temporary earth, AND it will be on the Creators terms and conditions (which He has spelled out.)

He already did intervene; When He sent down His Son to save us from the slaughter of our spirits and souls.

That only caused more [slaughter].

Our spirits and soul are not physical.

Our bodies obviously are, so they are subject to slaughter, suffering and dying in this world. But this world isn't God's Kingdom.

Free Will has made man a slave of the flesh, of greed, of lies, of selfishness. The Devil brings all to their knees - all except those who are washed in the blood of the Lamb. To those who haven't heard the Word, they shall be judged accordingly and perfectly.

Yes, even the "Saved" suffer physically, war...and die. BUT only ONCE.

Jesus said that his "presence" was irrelevant to the law and the prophets such as they were. His presence, he said, was a fulfilment of both.

BTW, Jews, used the laws in the Torah to guide them. Very few practiced a strict or literal adherence to them. They took the law and applied it to their circumstances. It's how law, especially common law, evolved.

It's called weather patterns that happen every 7-10 years or so. I lived in Texas for 12 years, we had 2 droughts and 2 rainy years in that period of time and the rest was normal........ Lakes would be down 50' one year because of no rain and be overfull 2 years later because of the rains...... nothing unusual whatsoever....

Tyrant means lone ruler or big boss...

No...

Tyrant:

a : an absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution b : a usurper of sovereignty

2 a : a ruler who exercises absolute power oppressively or brutally b : one resembling an oppressive ruler in the harsh use of authority or power

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tyrant

Whose sovereignty is God "usurping"? Is God "oppressing" you right now? Since when does a tyrant allow freedom? Or grant mercy or clemency?

In fact the Bible says we should fear God so he is a terrorist - initiator of terror.

I suppose so are Mommy and Daddy "terrorists" - along with spiders and snakes, and the goobermint (for real.)

It is by God's love and mercy that sinners-all have the opportunity (through Free Will) of dwelling in His Kingdom of Paradise forever. IF you insist on doing things your way, I guess like a petulant little child, you'd consider God mean ol' "terrorist."

I guess the flood makes God an eco-terrorists as well....

Sorry Libby...I nailed it. The context of the Sermon on the Mount was that the law existed as an earthly covenant between people that, once followed, established the more important spiritual covenant with God.

And in the end, he established a new law, ironically based on the Beatitudes and "Love thy neighbor..." and a new convenant - born again blah blah blah - anyway...

Then why did Jesus say he didn't come to destroy the law?

Jesus revealed "himself" over time and his purpose on earth. If you recall, the "Messiah" of the Old Testament was one who was going to "save" the Jews by freeing them from all bondage. The working assumption being that Jesus would be a literal warrior. No one expected him to preach that salvation wasn't prisoner to a condition of servitude or freedom. No one expected him to preach that salvation was a function of peace, love and understanding. So yes, obey the laws and the prophets by...BELIEVING IN HIM and his message.

What was the law but God's word? What were the prophets but purveyors of God's will? What was the Messiah? The embodiement of both.

Then why did Jesus say he didn't come to destroy the law?

It was within the context of the Sermon and very early in his ministry. He didn't reveal the full purpose of his presence to his disciples until The Last Supper.

When he was asked "What is the greatest commandment?" He actually cited two. One is similar to the first commandment but tempered slightly. The second is a commandment that cannot be found in Exodous. It is, however, the underpinning of some of the laws in Leviticus, a good portion of which is a social welfare code. Do you know what the commandment was?

When he was asked "What is the greatest commandment?" He actually cited two. One is similar to the first commandment but tempered slightly. The second is a commandment that cannot be found in Exodous. It is, however, the underpinning of some of the laws in Leviticus, a good portion of which is a social welfare code. Do you know what the commandment was?

I heard sermons preached with the theme that Christ was condensing the 10 commandments into two with His response.

Interesting - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." is a pretty good summation of the 1st five commandments; and "Love your neighbor as yourself" summarizes 6-10.

God didn't need to bring the flood to wipe out the human race and every other living thing with it.

I'm sure he could have done it another way.

To bad you weren't there to give him some advice. He might have done a better job huh? ;)

I've been served navy chow that might have done the trick.

Yes. But I find the morphology, or condensing as you say, an interesting twist to the question. When Christ finished by stating: "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" [Mt22:40], the whole sense of mortal Christianity is established.

Thinks about it: Love God...Love others...and the last, accept Jesus as Saviour is the whole of it.

I've always found the Book of Matthew to be the most compelling Gospel in terms of what a Christian should be.

Of course, I also believe the risen from the dead stuff to be a bunch of fairy tales. But, IMHO, Matthew gives the clearest course of moral conduct out of any of the Gospels.

America...My Kind Of Place...

"I truly am not that concerned about [bin Laden]..."
--GW Bush

"THE MILITIA IS COMING!!! THE MILITIA IS COMING!!!"
--Sarah Palin's version of "The Midnight Ride of Paul revere"

I lurk to see if someone other than Myst or Pookie posts anything...
