Happy birthday, Web!

On August 6, 1991--20 years ago--Tim Berners-Lee posted a summary of a project for organizing information on a computer network using a "web" of hyperlinks: the "WorldWideWeb," or W3. At the same time, the W3 made its debut as a publicly available service on the Internet. Now, as the Web turns 20, those of us here at CNET and sister site CBS News.com are giving it a big thank you for revolutionizing the world as we know it.

There have been some definite downsides to the Web, such as online predation and a reduction in privacy, but the good has far outweighed the bad. Web companies have created millions of jobs across the globe, opened people up to different cultures and ideas, and created a level of transparency in politics that's never quite been achieved before.

Through social, economic, and political actions online, the world has become entirely different than it was two decades ago. News travels faster than ever; every single person with access to the Internet has a voice to vent frustration or foster a following; and social interactions have become more varied and far- reaching.

The Web has changed the way people think and revolutionized the world as we know it in a remarkably short period of time. From clunky modems to smartphones, Web- based technology has come a long way. The only question is how far will it continue to evolve in the next 20 years?

Thank you govt socialism.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

Thank you govt socialism.

Stupid ass, the World-Wide Web was not invented by the government.

Neither was the web browser.

Stupid ass, the World-Wide Web was not invented by the government.

Neither was the web browser.

It was govt funding all the way for the WWW and the creation of the first web browser. The internet is a socialist/govt funded invention.

And it was not even American!

Twenty years ago today -- on Aug. 6, 1991 -- the first website was published, heralding in the beginning of the Internet as we know it.

The web page was published by Tim Berners-Lee, a 36-year-old physicist, who was working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in the Swiss Alps.

The first web page address is still active at http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

No, it was Tim Berners Lee, who was an independent contractor at CERN in Geneva.

He came up with the idea himself and then went around begging people at CERN to help him.

A researcher at Stanford (a private university) brought an initial implementation back to the U.S. where it started to spread throughout the U.S.

No government planning involved.

BOZO.

No, it was Tim Berners Lee, who was an independent contractor at CERN in Geneva.

In 1980 he was an independent contractor at CERN. Then he returned to CERN im 1984 as a fellow. By 1989 via CERN's facilities he brought about the WWW. The first web site built was at CERN, and was first put online on 6 August 1991.

European govt funding via what you kooks in the Tea Party/GOP call "socialism" was responsible for the birth of the WWW.

These facts are on the internet.
