AP NewsBreak: SC tourism slumps sharply in '09

The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- New figures show how badly South Carolina tourism was battered by the Great Recession.

The figures from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism show tourism was off 8 percent in 2009. Tourism had an impact of $14 billion after years of generally steady growth. The impact was down from about $15 billion the previous year.

Agency spokesman Marion Edmonds said Wednesday the industry has been steadily rebounding and he thinks the loss has been made up by now.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Tourism in South Carolina was severely battered by the Great Recession after years of generally steady growth, according to new figures released by the state.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism released numbers this week showing tourism was off 8 percent in 2009 as the recession pounded the economy and kept people from traveling.

The industry had a total impact of about $14 billion in 2009, down about $1 billion from the previous year.

Figures from the agency show that tourism had generally increased since 1991, with the exception of 2001 and 2002, when growth leveled off as people cut back on travel in the wake of the 9-11 terror attacks.

Agency spokesman Marion Edmonds says that the deep 2009 drop in one of the state's largest industries wasn't really expected.

"Isn't there an old Monty Python thing that no one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition? I don't know that anybody expected it in any sector of the economy," he said.

"Tourism nationally, internationally and in South Carolina has been a strong performer and a performer that has tended to perform above the average," he added.

But he said the state has made a steady recovery in tourism in the past 18 months and early indicators are that the 8 percent drop has been made up.

The state had been using a tourism impact number of more than $18.4 billion for 2008, a number that included money South Carolinians spent traveling outside the state.

Such spending is incorporated in some models to gauge tourism impact. But this year the state revised the way it reports the numbers to eliminate such outside spending.

Edmonds said it provides a clearer picture of tourism in the state.
