Joe Lieberman (I-CT) announced on the Senate floor Tuesday that he was working on a bipartisan proposal to reform Social Security. He said reforming entitlement programs like Social Security was necessary to prevent cuts to the defense budget. “Bottom line, we can’t protect these entitlements and also have the national defense we need to protect us in a dangerous world, while we’re at war with Islamist extremists who attacked us on 9/11 and will be for a long time to come,” he said. Lieberman and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) previously introduced legislation that would have gradually moved the eligibility age for Social Security up by two years. With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction. When the Social Security was created, the retirement age was 65, but life expectancy was only 59 for men and 61 for women. Now life expectancy is 73 for men and 78 for women, yet the retirement age is still 65. The system is not sustainable. We need to move from a define benefit program to a defined contribution program. You and your employer should put money in a retirement account. If you are low income, the government should kick in some money to the retirement account. You should be able to decide when you can afford to retire. U.S. foreign policy also needs to be overhauled to face 21st century realities. NATO was created to protect Europe from the Soviet Union. There hasn't been any Soviet Union since 1989. Why does NATO still exist? We're borrowing money from Japan to defend Japan. We're borrowing money from Saudi Arabia to defend Saudi Arabia. We're borrowing money from China to defend others from China. The $1 trillion we spent on the Iraq War has given Iran a huge opening to destabilize the country. As soon as we leave Afghanistan, the Taliban will be back. We're bombing Libya for what reason??? It's insane. Both share a common problem -- as Ronald Reagan said: "the closest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on earth is a government program". Once the government creates a department, agency, or program it become impossible to reform when the circumstances change. That's the problem with the stinking government.
