Previously unseen FBI documents have revealed the son of legendary mobster Al Capone drunkenly threatened to 'assassinate' the late Senator Edward Kennedy. Three weeks after his brother Senator Robert Kennedy was shot dead in Los Angeles, Albert 'Sonny' Capone was overheard in a Miami restaurant saying Ted Kennedy might 'get it too'. The 1968 threat was revealed in a newly-released part of the former Massachusetts senator's FBI file, which is almost entirely made up of threats against the youngest Kennedy brother. Was he a target? FBI files have revealed a threat was made against late Senator Ted Kennedy by the son of mobster Al Capone Intercepted: Albert 'Sonny' Capone, second right as a young boy, was overheard making the threat during a drunken phone call at a restaurant in Florida It is likely to fuel conspiracy theories that the mob was involved in the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy. According to the file, a man overheard Capone, 50, make a call from a public phone at the New England Oyster House in Coral Gables, Florida, on June 24, 1968. At one point in the conversation, witnesses claimed he said: 'If Edward Kennedy keeps fooling around he was going to get it, too.' Capone identified himself after asking the operator to bill the call to his home in Palm Island and he 'appeared intoxicated', the report states. Despite being the son of a mob figure Capone - who died in 2004, is thought to have led a law-abiding life, including working as a florist. Right, President Kennedy was infamously killed in Dallas in 1963 The file also contained two letters warning Ted Kennedy against speaking publicly in Ocala, Florida, during a visit in 1972. One reads: 'It will not be safe for you. Some of us are for you, but big majority are against you. 'It will only stir the mess you were in with Mary Joe.' That refers to a car accident Mr Kennedy had on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Massachusetts, in July 1969 which killed campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne. Mr Kennedy arrived in Ocala on a private plane and stayed at the home of George Steinbrenner, the owner of the Kinsman Stud Farm. He was assigned two police officers for his protection and Mr Steinbrenner hired up to ten men from the Pinkerton Detective Agency to guard him, according to the Huffington Post. Other threats against Mr Kennedy include various calls over plots to kill him. An anonymous call in 1965 to police in Lynn, Massachusetts, warned that 'Kennedy will not reach city hall tonight'. Another, from a female caller, claimed to have learned of a plot from Cuba to assassinate him. The file also contains more recent threats, including an investigation into an envelope filled with white powder that was sent to his office after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. The envelope also contained a note which said 'Freedom Dies With You'. More than 2,300 pages of his FBI file were released last year. Mr Kennedy died in 2009 after battling brain cancer.
