Half of US social program recipients believe they “have not used a government social program” Posted by Cory Doctorow on Friday, Jul 8th at 10:48am “Reconstituting the Submerged State: The Challenges of Social Policy Reform in the Obama Era,” a paper by Cornell’s Clinton Rossiter Professor of American Institutions Suzanne Mettler features this remarkable chart showing that about half of American social program beneficiaries believe that they “have not used a government social program.” It’s the “Keep your government hands off my Medicare” phenomena writ large: a society of people who subsist on mutual aid and redistributive policies who’ve been conned (and conned themselves) into thinking that they are rugged individualists and that everyone else is a parasite.

You don't pay taxes on interest you simpleton. It's a social program kick back. The intent of the MID was to increase homeownership by reducing income tax liability. This was the reasoning back in 1913 - when the Progressives started the program. Addressing the National Association of Realtors in 1984, President Reagan said, "I want you to know that we will preserve the part of the American dream which the home-mortgage-interest deduction symbolizes."
It's a tax deduction. It's part of my own money I get to keep. The government isn't giving me ANYTHING.
LOL! It is a social program because the govt is inducing a behavior - making it more financially attractive to buy a home than say buy a yacht or jewelry.
