Hurricane watchers kept their focus on a Caribbean storm brewing that the National Hurricane Center expects will become Tropical Storm Emily within 48 hours. Coastal states could be lashed by the weekend if the storm moves into the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic.
Monday morning, the system was about 250 miles east of Martinique.
"This system has a high chance, 90 percent, of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, the center stated. "If the system becomes a tropical cyclone today tropical storm warnings would be issued for portions of the Northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands on very short notice."
The National Hurricane Center also reported Monday morning that Tropical Storm Eugene in the Eastern Pacific could become a hurricane Monday night.
It had winds at around 65 mph and extended outward up to 70 miles, the center stated.
The storm was far out at sea and was not expected to threaten any land.
