MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST (KTLA) -- More than 460,000 marijuana plants were destroyed and over 100 people were arrested during a series of raids in and around the Mendocino National Forest, officials said Friday.
The raids have been conducted over the past several weeks and came in response to complaints that the farms were destroying ecosystems and scaring hikers away.
"The Mendocino National Forest is under attack by drug traffickers," U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said at a news conference Friday. "Visitors to the forest are increasingly intimidated by the prospect of armed drug traffickers and illegal cultivation sites.
Authorities targeted 56 growing sites across six Northern California counties and confiscated 27 guns as well as fertilizers, chemical pesticides and over 23 tons of trash.
Over 25 local and federal agencies were involved in the raids.
