Gallup is out with a national poll testing a number of possible late entries into the GOP primary. The survey is encouraging for Rick Perry, who would begin with 18 percent of the vote and trail Mitt Romney by 5 percentage points. Michele Bachmann would be in third place with 13 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 10 percent.

The survey finds that if either Sarah Palin or Rudy Giuliani entered the race, they'd fare a bit worse than Perry, taking 15 and 14 percent, respectively. If all three got into the race, it would be a free-for-all, with Romney at 17 percent, Perry at 15 percent, Palin at 12 percent and Giuliani and Bachmann tied at 11 percent.

It's extremely unlikely that Perry, Palin and Giuliani will all get into the race, but it's still notable that Romney's support drops from 27 percent against the current field, to 17 percent against a field that includes those three big- name opponents. That suggests that 10 percent — more than a third — of people who pick Romney as their first choice right now would prefer, or at least be willing, to vote for someone else.

Also worth pointing out: Herman Cain's support has dropped to 5 percent nationally, confirming his fade as a political and media phenomenon. Newt Gingrich continues to hold onto 7 percent, while two candidates considered far more viable, Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman, take 4 and 2 percent respectively.

If Perry gets into the race, he'd probably suck the wind out of Bachman's sails pretty quickly. The GOP field could be down to Romney, Perry, and Paul very quickly.

If he does get in, the ticket will probably wind up being Romney and Perry.

The Freepers are bashing Perry over his immigration stance and his push for mandatory vaccination of Texas girls against HPV. He was also recently quoted as saying that abortion is a "states rights" issue.

Romney on the other hand just floated Marco Rubio and Bob McDonnell as potential VP choices. McDonnell would make a great deal of sense for him.

Romney will be the GOP nominee whether anyone like it or not. It's him or the Kenyan again.

Now, I know I’m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believers…those who read all of Reverend Al’s sermons, and say things like, “You know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, …”. Can I get an ‘amen’??

Doesn't he know that the lunatic birthers have declared Rubio to not be a "natural born citizen"?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. Remember how confident everyone was that Hillary would be the nominee.

Romney has to win NH big or he's in trouble.

The GOP has to win Florida to win the White House, so Rubio makes a lot of sense as well.

Pursued by U.S. Marshals following the 1882 crackdown on polygamists, Miles Park Romney set up shop in Mexico with other Mormon settlers.

Romney is likely not one either. When did his Mexican born father George renounce his allegiance to the country of his birth?

The Romney clan got run into Mexico by the US army for being polygamists. There are still a bunch of them down there.
