RICHMOND, Va. (WLS) - The presidential race is already creeping onto local television in the 2012 battleground of Virginia.
The Republican National Committee previewed a new 30-second attack ad Wednesday that portrays President Barack Obama as a dupe of a China that has mastered the United States by January 2017, the hypothetical end of Obama's second term.
The ad, with light penetration but a big social media component in Virginia, depicts a wide-eyed girl in a darkened room fearfully viewing television images of Obama before a red-and-yellow Chinese flag and a cutaway shot of China's Communist leaders applauding.
RNC political director Rick Wiley says the ad is also airing in North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, Florida and Indiana - states Obama won in 2008 but Republican George W. Bush carried in his 2004 re-election.
An afterthought in presidential elections for decades, Virginia was a decisive battleground in 2008 and a critical loss for the GOP in what had been a solidly Republican South. Obama was the first Democrat since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 to win Virginia in a presidential race.
This year, not only is Virginia in play again, but Obama's chief supporter in 2008, then-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, is in one of next year's most-watched U.S. Senate races. Republican George Allen, trying to win back the seat he lost to Democratic Sen. Jim Webb in 2006, is favored to win the GOP nomination over a little-known field.
The GOP is striking while Obama struggles with Congressional Republican leaders to reach a compromise on raising the nation's $14.3 trillion borrowing limit by Tuesday or default on its bills for the first time in history. Wiley said polls show the drama is taking a toll on Obama heading into his re-election year.
"Across the board you're seeing it," he said. "We believe Barack Obama is beatable."
The ads, he said, "gives us a trial run before we put our grass roots in place across Virginia."
Brian Coy, a spokesman for the Democratic Party of Virginia, said the GOP is "holding our economy hostage" for political gain.
"They can launch all the ridiculous attack ads they want, but it won't distract Virginians from the fact that Republicans don't understand working families and don't have a plan to create jobs," Coy said.
OBAMA: "Let's you and him compromise. Do it MY way"
What did Obama take off of the table when he met with Boehner and Cantor?
On the other hand, what did Boehner and Cantor put ON the table when they met with Obama?
We are a government of compromise and not of factionalism. If you want to see factionalism at work, move to Greece, Italy or Spain and enjoy the stability.
It's moot anyway, neither Boehner nor Cantor can deliver their caucus. Does that help the GOP? Does it help the extremists in that party who require their candidates to sign intransigent "pledges" and then hold them to 100% compliance to orthodoxy?
The GOP has once again shown that while they may be brilliant campaigners, their method of governance always gets them in the end. This is 1997 all over again and you're going to see a "conservative" Paxton type coup try to overthrow Boehner and Cantor. It will fail and set the stage for a) an Obama re-election and b) an erosion of the GOP majority in the House.
It's impossible to mount an united opposition when the opposition, itrself, is a) not united nor b) in step with the electorate.

The issue here is either honoring or not honoring debt. The rest is bullshit.
No, that's not the issue. The issue is whether we should be running up even more debt.
To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. Thomas Jefferson

IMHO the issue is "how to we increase economic growth and spur job creation/wage increases." Talking about cutting government spending when the economy is limping along is idiotic and ignores what is currently going in countries like the UK that adopted austerity, as well as our own history (see 1937).
The Democrats have let the Republicans shape the wrong agenda. Get back to 3-4% growth and the deficit becomes a much smaller issue.
If you're making the decision to finance a new car purchase, you don't stop paying the mortgage.
The only people who claim that we won't pay the interest on the current debt are fear mongering Democrats.

You're probably right with regard to the entire state of Virginia. My assessment was with respect to the blanket assertion by go65 that the state would be "hit the hardest."
Northern Virginia and the Tidewater area (Norfolk/Va. Beach) are heavily tied to the federal government, and those just happen to be the two biggest economic areas in the Commonwealth.
yep. The only "industries" within 30-35 minutes of the DC-VD corridor are goob pencil pushers, paper shufflers, and parasitic bureaucrat hives. BOO-frickin'-HOO! All the burb McMansions of these leeches will have to be sold/foreclosed upon!!
Verizon Business, Sprint, Marriott, Discovery Networks, Capital One, NeuStar, XO Communications, Rosetta Stone, ExxonMobil, NVR Homes, Gannett, Hilton Hotels, Airbus, Rolls Royce, and Volkswagon are but a small list of companies with either HQ or major operations in the D.C. area that have little to do with the federal government.
The debt and deficits are two separate issues that have been melded into one. This nation incurred its first debt a few months after the Revolution was over.
So we balance the budget tomorrow. We still have debt that does not come due until 2041. So we cut spending to the point where we surplus a trillion dollars a year. That's enought to retire barely a year's worth of debt as it comes due.
So, we go ahead and do the latter, my guess is that the GOP, as it did in 2001, doesn't pay down debt but instead opts to give tax cuts to the wealthy.

We have more than interest coming due. We have $90bln in TBills maturing on 8/4.
TBills mature all of the time. More TBills are sold to pay for the ones that are maturing.
The only way that won't happen is if the Democrats convince people that the government is at risk of not paying interest on the debt.
Obama could put all of this nonsense to bed today, by just telling us what he will prioritize if the debt ceiling isn't raised. But he won't do it because he'd rather scare old people, claiming their Social Security checks won't show up, to gain political advantage for himself.
His behavior is sickening.

Okay...and...? TBills are subject to the statutory debt limit. The US will not be able to issue TBills to pay for the maturing ones because the Debt Limit is suubject to trade date accounting not maturity date.
SS will be paid in August. Tax receipts in July and a CMB issued last week has ensured this.

So IOW...the affected businesses are communications/spy industries and motels/hotels for goob drones and international lobbyists at which to have their affairs and meetings? And let's not forget the crippled luxury vehicle business in the DC area (boo-hoo...sob, sniffle.)

Again I refer you to The Federalist #10 in which the reason for the Framers choosing a Republic over a Democracy is discussed.
So, no, there is no need to read minds when the Framers have spelled out their reasoning of one over the other in print for posterity.
You first.
You never disappoint my very low expectations of you. You've spent more time on my bozo then off of it and, at this point, I really don't care which way you go.
You attempted to posit something that, as you wrote it, makes 0 sense. Now, honestly, I could care less if you clarified it. But, this appeared to be one of those few times where you are TRYING to have a discussion. If that is not the case tell me now.

You need to post this over and over. The Teabaggers apparently don't want to pay back the money they've already spent.
For this I blame Obama. Now everyone believes that the budget and debt are the same goddam thing. They aren't and he - and the Democrats - should have made this clear from the onset.
David Stockman was just on CNBC calling the US' credit rating worthy of that of a Banana Republic.

Currently, we are no longer a representative Republic. No use in pretending anymore.

You still haven't learned to consider points and compromise in debating issues - much like your hero, 0bama.

You just wanted another excuse to act out, rant and show everyone how 'bright' you are with your made up vocabulary. Which is the reason you always come over here.

So who made the decision, and is Obama now a member of the Supreme Court?
You are getting way out in space even for a Tea Bagger, and need to tell your doc the current drug regimen isn't maintaining your grasp on reality and he needs to reevaluate.
