With the clock ticking down, House Speaker John Boehner will rewrite his debt ceiling legislation to ensure that it meets his oft-stated pledge to cut spending more than Congress increases the federal borrowing limit.

That was the word from Boehner's office after the Congressional Budget Office on Tuesday evening estimated that the Budget Control Act of 2011 would reduce deficits by only $851 billion over 10 years.

By contrast, Boehner's bill would have allowed for an immediate debt ceiling increase of $900 billion.

Why doesn't anyone in Congress propose two simple methods of reduction? Here, I shall help:

1) freeze all US government payrolls and benefits until further study.

2) Get the fuck out of these wars all over the planet. As an example: America is still involved with South Korea after some 50 years later with troops doing NOTHING.

I agree with both of those points and we should do that, but we need more.

The government is wasting so much money.

Why do we need 30 different welfare programs? Why can't we have just one? The administrative savings alone would be substantial.

Why do we pay farmers NOT to grow food. Why do we put floors under the price of dairy and other farm products and subsidize farmers when the price fluctuates below the floor?

Why does the Commerce Department pay for adds that promote American businesses overseas? Can't businesses pay for their own ads? What does the Commerce Department do anyway, except take a census every 10 years?

Why do we pay millions, or billions every year to build new government buildings that are never used or to maintain existing building that aren't being used?

Why did taxpayers pay the University of California at Santa Cruz to digitize Grateful Dead photographs, tickets, backstage passes, fliers, shirts and other memorabilia?

Why did the Securities and Exchange Commission spend $3.9 million in 2007 and 2008 just to rearrange desks at their Washington D.C. headquarters???

Why did the Federal Communications Commission paid $350,000 to sponsor a NASCAR driver?

Why do we mail Social Security checks to fugitives even though a 1996 law prohibits it?

Why did we pay to hire 2 million government workers in Iraq to promote "stability"?

Why do we pay for studying the drinking habits of prostitute in China, gay men's penis sizes, and a hoard of other useless "research" projects?

Why does the Department of Defense rack up $100 million of unused plane tickets each year and not get refunds?

On and on and on...

The government is completely out of control. We need serious people in office who will take a stand and reign it all in.

farm states have more power in Congress then they should have.

The rest of the stuff you list is nickel and dime. Why do we spend $1 trillion on wars we had no business fighting? Why did we waste $34 billion in screwed up contracts (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/23/us-usa-afghanistan- waste-idUSTRE76M27Y20110723)

When will the GOP actually care about that sort of waste instead of focusing in piddly crap like you listed?

Why did they just expand the defense budget by ANOTHER $17 billion without any debate/complaints?

While there is a lot of pork in farm subsidies, the farm subsidy programs that are at the core of the matter are there to ensure crop rotations and to prevent the price dropping below the level where there is no incentive to grow food, etc. If you say the market will take care of that and farmers will behave rationally, history shows they did not and would not.

But ethanol subsidies and subsidizing boutique farms for the rich like Michelle Bachmann's fake farm that can and should end.

I think we all agree on that, but for some reason the GOP blocks any and all efforts to remove Ethanol subsidies. Grover Norquist has long criticized efforts to repeal the $5 billion annual ethanol tax credit as a tax increase.
