The U.S. Postal Service, which may run out of money in September, said it may close as many as 3,700, or 12 percent, of its post offices as customers buy more services online and through locations such as grocery stores.

For communities without a post office, the USPS will sell stamps and offer services through local retailers, the service said in a statement today before a press conference in Washington. Post offices at New York City’s Port Authority and Roosevelt Island and in Newark, New Jersey, are among those

those being considered.

The postal service, which reported a loss of $2.6 billion for the quarter ended March 31, is seeking to cut costs as it approaches its $15 billion borrowing limit. The USPS has almost 32,000 post offices. The closings may save $200 million, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said at the news conference.

“A lot of the decisions we make around our operations are based on the revenues that come into the operation,” Donahoe said.

I thought USPS stood for US Postal SERVICE, not corporation.

It's a necessary SERVICE (think of it as being similiar to military which doesn't make a profit either) provided for in the constitution. Lots of places still don't get good internet or cell phone service believe it or not. In California too.

it is funded out of revenues, it doesn't get federal subsidies/support. But, like Amtrak is has a mandate to deliver mail everywhere, even where unprofitable.

Closing post offices and eliminating saturday service make a great deal of sense.

I know and that's been the problem since Nixon restructured it. It needs to go back to being a basic no frills service. And you can bet that the POs being closed are in areas that need it the most.

I can remember when the PO delivered mail twice a day in urban/suburban areas, and it didn't make a profit then either.

It delivers mostly junk mail to you because it gives orgs that do large mailings and those vaunted sources of capitalist enterprise: businesses, which are the sources of most junk mail, a special cheaper rate.

The Pennysaver and zit cream makers should pay more.

Political flyers, too. Election time equals heavy lifting for my mailman. Do candidates/PolOrgs get discounts, too?

Sounds like the only areas that actually need the PO will probably be the ones to be closed. And what happens when you can't recharge your cell phone or laptop and viola! Late payment charge and a credit ding.

Strange you should bring that up. You are assuming folks make a payment based on a due date. But that "due date" is the last day payments may be made without a penalty.

Pay the bills on time, that is so say, when they arrive and save yourself the grief of a delinquent payment.
