A giant explosion rocked government buildings in Oslo, Norway, on Friday, state TV broadcaster NRK said, with at least one person confirmed dead. Windows in several buildings had been blown out, and people were in the street bleeding, NRK said on its website. The cause of the blast remains unknown. There are conflicting reports about whether a second blast followed the first, which occurred mid- afternoon in the center of the Norwegian capital. A spokesman for Oslo police told CNN: "There has been a bomb explosion in the government area. At least one person is dead, and a number of people are injured. We don't have the exact number yet. "We don't know if this comes from a terrorist action; we don't know yet. We don't know exactly how many explosions (there) were yet. Oslo center has been evacuated." He confirmed that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was not in his office at the time of the blast. Linda Reinholdsen, a reporter for Norwegian state broadcaster NRK, said one explosion happened near the prime minister's office. Another hit near the Norwegian parliament, she told CNN. Several buildings in Oslo were on fire, she said, and smoke was pouring from them.

BBC just reported that someone dressed like a cop is shooting up a Labor Party youth camp. If not an act of organized terrorism by Islamists, etc it may be the act of a disgruntled cop or Norwegian?

A man disguised as a police officer began shooting where prime minister Jens Stoltenberg was attending a Labour party conference at Utoya, Stoltenberg has just confirmed. He said there is a 'critical and serious situation' where he is (but he is safe). He was speaking on the phone to Norwegian TV station TV2. 5.11pm: Police are now saying 15 people are confirmed injured, says the BBC. They are telling people to leave the centre of Oslo and warning there could be more explosions. They are also examining an unexploded package, although the location of the package is not clear. 4.57pm: You can watch the live coverage from state broadcaster NRK here (it is in Norwegian). (via my colleague Laura Oliver) 4.56pm: The official police statement says: There has been one or several powerful explosions in the government district in Oslo. So far, police cannot say anything about the scope of the damage, aside from that there's been one or several explosions. The BBC says police have told them it is believed to be terrorism-related although they do not no the motive. "Terrorists" aka mooselimbs.

Andrew Boyle, a journalist in Norway, has sent me the following: There are 700 people on the island camp. At 5.20 pm ambulance personel were told not to proceed out to the island because there was still shooting there. One Labour youth member tweeted: "We are sitting down by the beach. A man is shotting clothed in a police uniform. Help us! When are the police coming to help us!" Police stormtroopers are about to land on Utoya island from helicopters. Shooting still going on. 6.09pm: NRK is reporting that an unknown group called "Helpers of the Global Jihad" have posted a message that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian periodicals publishing the Muhammed cartoons, according to Andrew Boyle, a journalist in Norway. Just some democratic muslim rebels, enjoying Arab Spring.

5.14am Earlier reports across media that a group called 'Helpers of Islamic Jihad' had claimed responsibility for the attacks seem to be wrong. Analyst Will McCants posted the original claim, made by Abu Sulayman al-Nasir on Arabic jihadi forum 'Shmukh'. He then issued an update, telling news.com.au the original claim was "not real". Update: Abu Sulayman has now issued a retraction, stating clearly that “Helpers” was not involved in the operation and that his statement was not an official statement. Ok. Understood. I know have duct tape covering the right side areas of my monitor when I sense impending stupity in the title. I'm working on getting the tape to scroll up and down as I slide my cursor but it's not working very reliably yet. I'll keep you posted.
