Amtrak, the government-run railroad is thanking high gasoline prices and airport security screening hassles for what could be its highest annual ridership in its 40-year history. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that Congress approved $1.56 billion in taxpayer funding for Amtrak in 2010.

Created by the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, Amtrak - the National Railroad Passenger Corporation -- is a for-profit corporation authorized to operate intercity passenger rail services in 46 States and the District of Columbia, in addition to serving as a contractor in various capacities for several commuter rail agencies. The 7 members of the Amtrak board of directors are appointed for 5-year terms by the President of the United States, with the approval of the Senate. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood currently serves as a voting member of the board.
