Amtrak, the government-run railroad is thanking high gasoline prices and airport security screening hassles for what could be its highest annual ridership in its 40-year history. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that Congress approved $1.56 billion in taxpayer funding for Amtrak in 2010. Amtrak Briefly:
Created by the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, Amtrak - the National Railroad Passenger Corporation -- is a for-profit corporation authorized to operate intercity passenger rail services in 46 States and the District of Columbia, in addition to serving as a contractor in various capacities for several commuter rail agencies. The 7 members of the Amtrak board of directors are appointed for 5-year terms by the President of the United States, with the approval of the Senate. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood currently serves as a voting member of the board.

How does that work?
The train carries both your car and you from Lorton (near Washington D.C.) to Sanford (near Orlando, FL). It's a 17 hour trip but it includes dinner, breakfast, and large comfortable seats. It's a favorite of north- eastern snow-birds for getting to/from retirement homes in Florida. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer? c=AM_Route_C&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1241245666320 They also have sleeper cars with/without private bathrooms. It's costing us a bit under $1,200 for the trip, which is much less than flying & renting a car, and much easier than driving 13-14 hours.
