Title: Postmaster says days are numbered for Saturday mail delivery

Falling mail volume and soaring red ink may soon doom Saturday mail delivery and prompt three-day-a-week delivery within 15 years, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe warns.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe predicts that within 15 years, mail service will be reduced to three days a week.

Donahoe's forecast is based on a projected $8.3 billion loss this year as the drift from paper to electronic communication hammers the Postal Service. "On Sept. 30," he told the USA TODAY editorial board Tuesday, "I won't be able to pay my bills."

Chief among them: a $5.5 billion payment due Sept. 30 to cover future retirees' health benefits.

Mail carriers have been making rounds six days a week since the 19th century. After postmasters started talking about cutting back, Congress mandated the six- day delivery in 1983.

Donahoe wasn't specific about how soon he would like to reduce service but said he thinks Congress, struggling with the federal budget, will be more open to the idea now. He said a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll last year helped move the discussion along. More than half of those polled had no problem with losing Saturday mail. The Postal Service estimates the move would save $3.1 billion a year.

Donahoe said the idea has "a much better chance today than a year ago. I don't know if I'd say 'likely' yet."

Asked about the long term, Donahoe said, "At some point, we'll have to move to three" days a week of mail delivery, possibly in 15 years.

Democratic Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware has introduced legislation that would let Donahoe make the Saturday change.

Montana Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrat, won't vote for it. He says losing Saturday delivery would hurt people in states like his, where simple errands can mean long drives and mail delivery is a lifeline.

"It's important to have delivery on Saturday in places like Montana to get things like medicine and things they need," he said.

Some business people aren't concerned. Richard Cech, founder of Horizon Herbs in Williams, Ore., notes that shipping live plants can be sensitive. "We really like to ship early in the week so people get their things by the end of the week," he said. "Very little gets delivered on a Saturday."

What a bunch of clowns.

The Post Office will take in over $54 billion in revenue this year, yet they are going to lose $8.5 billion.

Obama should appoint a CEO and CFO from the private sector to prepare the Post Office to be spun off.

They should look for new sources of revenue. How about selling ad space on their trucks and mailboxes? What about offering new services at their locations?

They should also look for cost cutting efficiencies. I'm sure that there are plenty.

Then they should IPO the company.

Fed X and UPS would be pissed.

And to think that for much of it's history there was twice a day delivery. But that was before Nixon decided it needed to be run like a business.

I've heard this for probably 30 years.

Now, I know Iā€™m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believersā€¦those who read all of Reverend Alā€™s sermons, and say things like, ā€œYou know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, ā€¦ā€. Can I get an ā€˜amenā€™??

How much does the army lose in revenue? The USPS is a constitutionally called for uniformed service and has almost always operated at a "loss" aka subsidized since Ben Franklin's era. A postal service is part of a civilized modern nation's infrastructure. You want to see a nation with out a postal service? See Somalia.

You are so misinformed that it's not even funny.

Germany privatized their Post Office in 1995. Today, the company is known as Deutsche Post DHL. It delivers mail across Germany and it competes in package delivery worldwide with 470,000 employees 51 billion euros in revenues. They are very profitable.

Japan Post was privatized in 2007.

Sweden largely privatized their postal service in 1993 by turning postal territories into franchises.

Greece is planning to sell it's post office in an effort to get it's budget under control.

I can go on, but there's no point because you are too stupid to understand.

Deutsche Post DHL is part owned by the German govt. It would be like the USPS buying out UPS and FedEx financed by tax dollars and sales of stock.

The German Deutsche Bundespost bought DHL and then Airborne Express.

Suddenly you are all for market socialism?

Completely wrong as usual.

Their postal service was privatized in 1995, just as I am advocating here. 30% of the company is owned by KfW bank. 70% is publicly traded. After they were in private hands, they bought DHL.

Also, all EU postal companies lost their monopoly on mail delivery in 2008 as a result of EU rules.

The U.S. is one of the few developed countries in the world which has a government owned postal service with a monopoly on mail delivery.

KfW banking group is a German government-owned development bank, you moron.

http://www.kfw.de/kfw/en/KfW_Group/About_KfW/How_we_work/Verantwortungsvolle_Refinanzierung /index.jsp

As a state-owned promotional bank, KfW can fund its business in the capital market at very good conditions and pass these loans on to retail customers, enterprises, non-profit organisations and municipalities at favourable rates.

My German cousins were right to call Americans stupid.......

I understand that dipshit. It doesn't change any of the facts I stated.

A.) Deutsche Bundespost was privatized in 1995

B.) It's publicly traded on the stock market

C.) After it was privatized, it bought DHL

D.) As of 2008, it no longer has a monopoly on mail delivery in Germany because of EU rules

E.) Unlike the U.S. Postal Service, it makes a profit because it's a private business and is run like a private business.

Those are called facts, you dumb bastard.

No, I don't think you do because you clearly avoided any mention of the public nature of said bank and it's stake.

You proposed USPS going private - I am all for it if we follow the German model. The USA has to create and fund it's own tax payer funded bank like the KfW - try that on for size right wing moron - which then spins off the USPS while still retaining a controlling 30% stake, uses the money raised in private and public funds to buy up the competition like UPS and FedEx leaving small local delivery services in place (bike messengers, etc very close to the types of companies in Germany that pose as competition).

I like how you so called right wingers in America admire the mixed social markets. That is because you know your Reaganesque model does not and never has worked.

Because under Reagan the USA not only lost her savings but her manufacturing base while mixed German social marketism prospered.

No, I don't think you do because you clearly avoided any mention of the public nature of said bank and it's stake.

I also avoided mentioning the CEO's name, the color his hair, or what kind of car he drives, because it's not relevant to the discussion at hand.

The USA has to create and fund it's own tax payer funded bank like the KfW...

Dumb ass, the U.S. government makes all kinds of investments in private programs through DARPA, ARPA-E, and In-Q-Tel (the CIAs venture capital arm).

I like how you so called right wingers in America admire the mixed social markets. That is because you know your Reaganesque model does not and never has worked.

Stupid shit, the U.S. Post Office is not a Reaganesque model. It's a 100% government owned FAILURE.

Governments at all levels in the U.S. now spend 42% of GDP. This has also been a failure.

I'm done with you too.

Bozoed.

But they are not govt owned banks are they?

IU see you ran away when confronted with facts. It's the nature of you right wing weasels.

That will never happen they're "UNIONIZED"....... and the biggest reason they aren't profitable.....

I have a friend who is a USPS Union steward and he said the biggest reason they lose so much is their contract..... Even though volume of mail is steadily decreasing the manpower isn't.... He said his Office has a room where some people sit all day and get paid even if there isn't anything for them to do..... sound familiar???? Teachers Unions do the same thing...... About the only way to get rid of those people is to shut down some of the branches, I've been hearing that for about 5 years now..... or hope some of them get pissed off at management and "FINALLY" retire......

When asked by a Liberal what I bought my Granddaughter for her 1st birthday I replied, "MORE AMMUNITION"!!!!

Yep. In any IPO situation, the employees should probably get 20% to 25% of the company. They could make a ton of money. But that union mentality won't allow it. That's tragic.
