These have been out for a while now and you can buy a mini version for your home for under $3,000 (which I assume will get cheaper as time goes on). http://www.makerbot.com/

I don't really know why the typical homeowner would need or want one,but I sure can see where one would be handy on the space station,submarines,remote ranches,etc,etc,etc. Sadly,I can see where these things will make skilled machinists/tool and die makers about as rare as rooster lips in the next 10 years or so.

The quality is vastly improved over what it was when I first heard of this.
