Much of middle America baked in a heat wave Sunday, with little respite in sight for Monday as temperatures and humidity are expected to make it feel warmer than 100 degrees Fahrenheit through much of this week. Excessive heat warnings have been declared by the National Weather Service in at least 14 states, most of those in the upper Midwest. Excessive heat watches were in place in Indiana and Kentucky, with heat advisories (the least imminent of the three) in effect for four other states. Several daily temperature records were broken Sunday -- from Alpena, Michigan, south to Miami, Florida. "This is the hottest it's been for the longest period of time," said Emily McNamara from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the temperatures were expected to hover in the mid-90s through the middle of the week.

we're expecting heat indexes in the low 110's this week in the D.C. area. Remember though that record hot temperatures are "not" evidence of global warming! ;-) "Thats because your basically and idiot." That would include me. Ugh!

Generally*, considering the placement of the majority of temperature measurement appratus, the increases can be trace to, in no particular order, proximity to: parking lot pavement, roads, air conditioner condensor air outflow, grills, airport tarmacs, nearby parked automobiles and jet aircraft exhaust ... then there are those shelters/temp measurment devices that are located amonsgt now grown-up trees; these don't have a clear view of the sky and therefore are limited as to LW IR cooling in the evening/nighttime hours ... All occurring in the modern ~ +50 years. But, this does not explain the record highs seen in the 1920's and 30's. . . * I say generally, because, some of the warming is an artifact of statistical 'number juggling' by NOAA/NCDC and NASA/GISS for a variety of reasons including TOB (Time of Observation changes) throughout the decades ...

I don't think we've broken past 70 degrees more than a couple of time this year in Seattle. ditto for Portland.
