(Reuters) - High temperatures and humidity were expected to bake a large swath of the United States again on Sunday and send afternoon heat indexes in dozens of cities to dangerous levels, where forecasters predicted they would remain through much of the coming week.

The National Weather Service posted excessive heat warnings for much of the nation's midsection, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, as well as South and North Dakota, where forecasters predicted heat indexes could hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

"This will likely be the most significant heat wave the region has experienced in at least the last five years," the weather service said.

The heat wave is expected to press east by the middle of the week, the weather service said.

In Chicago, where the high heat and humidity warnings were twinned with a poor air quality alert, forecasters expected temperatures to hit 95 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon, creating heat indexes as high as 105.

In Minnesota, the heat wave was expected to continue through Wednesday with possible thunderstorms in some parts. Highs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area could reach 94 degrees on Sunday, and 97 degrees from Monday through Wednesday.

The weather service is projecting possibly six consecutive days of temperatures at 90 degrees or higher in the Twin Cities, the longest stretch to far this year, but short of records, meteorologist Jim Richardson said.

"Basically, (Sunday) through Wednesday looks to be the warmest regime and humidity levels up there as well," Richardson said.

By mid week many locations on the East Coast will have heat index values approaching or exceeding 100 degrees, including Washington, D.C., the weather service said.

In St. Louis, temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees on Sunday, 98 on Monday and touch the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. The heat index values are expected to range from 105 to 115 degrees.

In the Kansas City area, heat index values are expected to range from 105 to 110 degrees on Sunday and then average about 110 degrees through Friday with oppressive heat and humidity. (Reporting by James B. Kelleher and David Bailey; Editing by Maureen Bavdek)

It's 66 and raining in Seattle. I was in Houston last Monday and Tuesday and it was 98. I love that weather.

We are sitting at 92 with 33% humidity right now but need rain really bad.

Only chance for that happens tomorrow however those prospects aren't great. After that, the real heat turns on with the potential for triple digits around wednesday.

Absolute worst timing for the garden crops. Trying to set fruit and that just doesn't happen when it is this hot.

The tree fruit set (poms especially) was poor in Nor Cal this year too. Too much rain during the bloom.

It's a cool 105 and sunny in Arizona ... love it.

I have seen the temperature at 122 ... and that was warm.

I love that weather too. 100+, not much humidity. I'm so jealous.

I have kids from a previous marriage in Seattle. I won't leave them. So, I'm stuck.

It's allegedly going to break 70 on Saturday with no rain. I don't believe it, but if it's true we're going to walk on Sammamish River Trail 5.5 miles to the Redhook Brewery for lunch and back. Otherwise, we are going to drive over the mountains and go to Leavenworth, where it will be hot and dry.

That I would love to do, walk along a river trail (again). I envy you for doing it, while I am happy for you to do it.

Had a trip to the mountains planned, but had to delay it for a couple of weeks, I am looking forward to that.

All my prime camping areas were burned out recently here in NE Arizona, broke my heart. I will now journey over the Nothern New Mexico.
