In an interview with CBS Evening News, President Obama says he can't guarantee Social Security checks will go out Aug. 3rd if a debt-ceiling deal is not reached by the Aug. 2nd deadline.

The following clip was posted on the cbs news website, more of the interview expected to air tonight:

Scott Pelley: Can you tell the folks at home no matter what happens that Social Security checks are going to go out on August the 3rd? There are about 20 billion dollars of Social Security checks that have to go out the day after the government is supposed to go into default.

Obama: Well this is not just a matter of Social Security checks, these are veterans checks, these are folks on disability, their checks. There are about 70 million checks that go out --

Scott Pelley: Can you guarantee as President those checks will go out on August the 3rd?

Obama: I can not guarantee those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it.

If these checks don't go out, how many people and business won't get paid?

Von Mises associates any Government involvement in markets as "Socialism" , to mislead people into thinking Government is the enemy , when infact empire is the enemy and empire is Privatized.

LOL! Your leader is a total failure! He has so little leadership ability he has to frighten the old people to get them to pressure their congresscreatures. What a pathetic DEMOCRAT loser Hussein Soetoro turned out to be.

Landlords, grocery stores, gas stations, use your imagination. What is the total that goes out monthly in the form of SS checks? How much economic activity will be lost in the private sector if those checks don't go out?

Car payments, mortgage payments, equity loan payments etc.. I can't believe the lack of forethought that goes into some of these so called conservative's posts. But it does say plenty about their elitist tendencies.

The goofy Kenyan can't stop SS checks from going out.

Funny, he didn't say anything about welfare or food stamps.

Now, I know I’m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believers…those who read all of Reverend Al’s sermons, and say things like, “You know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, …”. Can I get an ‘amen’??

That must be why there's ABSOLUTELY no difference in the amounts given out between the states. LOLOL So Texas welfare and food stamps equals California welfare and food stamps.

Non sequitur.

The money comes from the "landlords, grocery stores, gas stations," thus, economic efficiency is increased by removing the inherent parasitic losses due to government collection and redistribution costs.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The State can no longer hide the consequences of their 100-year lie. VERY interesting times are ahead.

Social Security is an insurance program with much lower overhead than private insurance companies. Perhaps we could increase efficiency and lower costs by making all insurance public.

WRONG.

SS is nothing but a wealth transfer. A TAX.

Anything else is pure propaganda.

The government is expected to collect $179 billion in revenue in August. Interest on the debt, Social Security, Medicare, and salaries for the troops add up to $143 billion. That's leaves $36 billion left for August. $36 billion is a lot of money. The remaining things will have to be prioritized to fit into the $36 billion. It's just that simple.

You're not listening again, as usual. I just told you that we can still pay the interest on the debt, Social Security, Medicare, and salaries for the troops in August and have $36 billion left over to pay for other things.

This is an old Democrat tactic to scare people by focusing cuts in areas that really hurt instead of areas that almost no one will miss. It's used at the local level all of the time, e.g. "if you don't raise taxes, we'll have to lay off police and firemen".

The GOP should immediately pass a law which states that if the debt ceiling isn't raised, the White House must prioritize paying the interest on the debt, Social Security, Medicare, and military salaries. The cuts have to come from somewhere else. That would take the teeth out of the Democrat fear mongering.

And I told you troop's salaries are on the table too, which would change the net you quote by quite a bit.

I take posters with a grain of salt who make up facts, can't seem to even define their goals and don't have a knack for accurate analysis. A tendency you have shown to be your standard procedure on this site.

Plus it's a forum for discussion a procedure that by it's very definition involves give and take and not just a lecture from a pip squeek like you. Which also means you have not been assigned a teaching job here.

I don't doubt you might want to elevate your status to that of a teacher some day. But then by that time you guys will have them down to making minimum wage or begging on street corners, so maybe not.

It's funny how people seem to not realize that the corruption created by this relationship the first time around was what led to civil service being created in the first place.

Of course the corporate community is well aware and evidently willing to take advantage of the rampant historical ignorance for another shot at really corrupting the system.
